Basketball drills for technique catching

  • Guards + Forwards + Centers
  • from U14 - 6 to 12 players
  • 4 balls
  • whole field
  • 2 baskets

Objective:

  • Pass on the flyer training and finishing at full speed
  • Players 1 and 4 receive the ball at the outlet position and dribble directly to the centre circle.
  • passer sprints along the sideline (flyer)
  • receives the ball at full speed
  • makes the lay up without a dribble

Teaching Points:

  • dribbler is not allowed to cross the centre line
  • the pass should be such that the flyer can finish without dribbling
  • The flyer must ask for the ball with his hand
  • execute at full speed
  • communication: outlet calls
  • after the lay up join the line near the basket where you scored
  • the dribbler returns directly to the outlet after the pass and for the next ball

Variations:

  • (to teach the attacker to finish at full speed under pressure)
  • Have a defender walk up to the attacker during the layup to distract him visually (no physical contact).
  • make the defender appear bigger with a mat or similar in his hands
  • Numbers opposite each other.
  • Increasing distance slowly.
    • Pass with 1 hand up on 1 hand teammate.
    • Catch with 1 hand and throw back. Continue until ball falls.
    • Alternate right/left.
  • As soon as this runs.
    • Two numbers left and right midcourt.
    • Throw with 1 hand, catch, pass with same hand on cutting player for lay-up.
    • Left/right alternate.
drawing Passing one-handed overhead

Start with 1 ball, later on you can use two balls.

  • 4 rows in 4 corners
  • 1 ball in opposite corner
  • pass to the man on the right, run straight ahead
  • pass to the running man, and run straight ahead
  • running man passes straight ahead, connecting behind the second row.

  • Call out the name of the person you're passing to.
  • after 5 minutes, switch sides and pass left

drawing Stardrill
  • Walk fast in pairs, from baseline to baseline on the right side of the field,
  • meanwhile chest-pass back and forth,
  • spacing approx. 3 meters.
  • Return on the left, but with bounce pass
drawing Warming-up with passing

  2. Stand in a circle
    • 1 ball / dribble on the spot

  • With 3 men on the back line and the middle one has a ball.
  • The middle one passes to a man and chases the ball.
  • The receiver keeps the ball behind him and the one who passed first takes the ball and passes on.
  • The person who has the ball behind his back runs behind the ball, picks it up at the receiver and passes on to the other side.
  • They do this while running to the basket on the other side.
  • If someone is close enough to the basket, the man plays a lay-up.
  • Make variations on the passing lines

  • Consider the pilons as the defense (players can also be used for this).
  • Player 1 (white runs) towards player blue.
  • Halfway through the run, player blue runs behind his defender and asks for the ball.
  • Player white passes to blue.
  • As soon as player blue catches the ball, player red sprints away behind his defender.
  • As soon as player red catches the ball player 2 sprints away from white behind his defender.
  • The makes the circle go round. This is an active exercise in which timing, passing and catching are a crucial part.
  • Because everyone is busy, this is also conditionally a good drill.
  • With younger players the distance between pilons is shorter.

drawing Cutting inside and passing
  • At the whistle each player chooses a position around the three-point line
  • Who will stand where is not (yet) told. (chaos)
  • The trainer passes to one of the players and that player must try to score while the trainer defends.
  • At the whistle, each player runs to an agreed position (designated or mutually determined who will stand where).
  • The trainer passes the ball to a player who is trying to score while defending.
  • The other players are not allowed to come within the three-point line.
    • At the whistle each player runs to their chosen position (agreed place).
    • The trainer passes to one of the players and that player must try to score while the trainer defends.
    • Now one of the other players may enter the circle and help with the attack. As soon as the ball has been passed, the person without the ball leaves the circle, after which another player may ask for the ball. There are never more than two attacking players within the three-point line.

Repeat each exercise 3 times

drawing Find your spot (1)
  • rebounder (1) passes to outlet (2)
  • and runs behind the outlet along the sideline to the other side to get the ball back for a layup.
  • Outlet (2) passes to a man in center circle (3),
  • He then dribbles to approx. the 3-point line and plays a bounce pass to (1) for lay-up.
  • (3) takes the rebound and is becomes (1) at the opposite site of the field
    • With 10 persons or more, include one (4) in the far corner.
    • In that case, (3) passes to (4), which then gives a bounce pass to (1)
    • and then grabs the rebound and becomes (1).
  • Two rows at the three-point line, extended freethrow line.
  • 1 row with ball(s). Player row 1 makes quick cut through the bucket.
  • Pass row 2 to player row 1.
  • Jump stop just past the ring.
  • About 1m of basket. Fakeshot.
  • Pivoting and reverse lay-up.
  • Turn pivot foot around defender. (Keep the defender in the back). 1 shot attempt.
  • On 2 baskets at the same time depending on the number of players.
  • 1 row of players stands in the corner at the 3-point line without ball. (A)
  • 1 row of players stands 1 meter outside the bucket and 1 meter below the free throwing line with ball. (B)
  • A runs to edge of the bucket on baseline and blocks (fictional). (2 pilons)
  • Cuts to head of the bucket, turns in with right foot, gets pass from B. B follows the pass.

  • Defense. A takes shot/ lay-up...
  • B moves to row A. Player A catches his own ball and connects in row B.
  • Left and right, basic drill for pick & roll offense.
  • Can be played with 2 baskets.
