Basketball drills for technique dribbling

  • 2 players at bottom of goal.
  • 2 players left extended free throw line.
  • 2 players right extended free throw line.
  • 2 players at the center circle.
  • Team 1 players top and bottom.
  • Team 2 players left and right.
  • Team 1 starts dribbling toward each other does a change of direction and accelerates.
    Variations: crossover, between the leggs, behind the back, double action, back up dribble.
  • When team 1 has done the change of direction team 2 may leave.

5 lines on the back line, trainer has the ball.

- 2 rows are defenders, rest is attack

- Everyone has to touch the middle line and then attack or defend

- Trainer throws ball in the field or in the circle

  • Everyone has a ball.
  • Everyone starts dribbling in a certain box. 
  • If your ball is tapped away, you have to fetch it and score on the other basket.
  • When you have scored, you may return to the box.

  • Parties with different assignments/restrictions. 
  • Please note:
    • Walk freely.
    • Do not dribble blindly.
    • Pass well.
    • Pivot.
    • Talking.
  • 3x3 without dribbling. (1 basket)
  • First 10 passes.
  • Both teams on the back line. (on stomach)
  • Trainer puts ball in play via shot or bounce. (Quick positioning, who will attack?).
  • Just play to the 10 (end game).



Starting position

  • All players with a ball on the baseline.


Explanation

  • Crossover: Good low position and change of speed.
  • Behind the back.
  • Through the legs.


Exercise

  • Zigzag to the other side.
  • Change of direction at line basket-basket.



  1. Make sure there are two balls for each player. Let the players get an extra ball themselves.
  2. Place the extra basketballs against the wall, behind the baseline.

Exercise 1
  • The player starts from the triple-threat position.
  • The player dribbles forward with the ball to the center line.
  • Player dribbles backwards with the ball to the baseline.
  • Points of Attention:
    • Player pushes the ball forward
    • Player takes the ball back with his fingertips.
Exercise 2
  • Player dribbles with two basketballs to the center line.
  • Player dribbles two basketballs to the baseline, backwards.

  • Divide players into groups of 5.
  • Normally we have 2 or 3 baskets available.
  • For example, every 7 minutes turn over, first center explanation. (most guidance on the dribbling skills needed)
  • Station 1. (Basket 1)
    • 3x2 play from the center line without dribbling (only passing, free running, pivoting)
  • Station 2. (basket 2)
    • 1x1 play (substitution, attacker becomes defender, occasionally change the order to get different match-ups, 1-shot attempt or under time pressure to keep up the momentum)
  • Station 3. (Basket 3 - if available)
    • Shooting exercise: 5 positions on edge of bucket (low, elbow, free throw line, elbow low).
    • 1 player shoots, others catch and pass the ball (1 shot per position, highest score of the group)
  • Station 4 dribbling skills. (1-2 pawns)
    • Over the pylon (do not take it with you, keep control, from left to right, 1 hand behind your back)
    • Lift the pylon with the left, dribble with the right (throw the pylon, catch it with the other hand)
    • Left/right and touch pylon (timer, counting) - hand that releases the ball must touch pylon (low position, defend the ball)
    • 2 pawns, dribble left, touch right
    • 2 cones (8 dribble with 1 hand)
  • Station 5 dribbling skills. (row of pawns)
    • Slalom around the pawns, low dribble, back and forth (tempo)
    • Variant: low dribble, feet on both sides of the pawns, cross after every pylon.
    • Low dribble, always touching the according pawns.
    • Stay in control, stay on the same side. (dribble left, touch pylon with right)
  • Slalom around the pawns. (low dribble)
  • Over the bank:
    • Low dribble on the ground, cross over.
  • Drive by cones:
    • Dribble with the left and touch each cone with the right.
  • Push-ups/abdominal thrusts on the middle line.
  • Layup.

    • Outward zigzag dribble around cones
    • Midline backline sprint/dribble
    • Side/slides over the back line
    • Back various commands (Crabwalk, backwards dribble, between the legs)
    • 5x push-ups, abs on midline
    • Finish with lay-up or shot from the hoop
  • Start slowly as a warming-up
  • Then faster and faster (keep distance)
  • Coach lining up on the way back to give different assignments

  • Successively:
    • Right: normal dribble, through the knees, defend the ball
    • Right: normal dribble, look at the trainer, not at the ball
    • Left: normal dribble, through the knees, defend the ball
    • Left: normal dribble, look at the trainer, not at the ball
  • Right/left alternate:
    • High hard dribble
    • Very low dribble
    • Sit on the buttocks low dribble
    • Lying down low dribble
    • Left/Right dribble with 1 hand
    • Dribble Front/Back 1 hand
    • Dribble through the legs
    • Machine gun
  • 2 rows on the baseline, relay:
    • Quickly dribble with the right and back
    • Dribble with the left and back again
    • Backward dribble with right
    • Backward dribble with the left


  • 10 minutes:
    • 5'right
    • 5'left
  • 2 lines
    • right side 2 balls
    • Half of players right side
    • half of players left side to rebound

  • For fitness this is a good exercise:
  • The group has to line up and you let them start dribbling slowly.
  • As soon as the trainer blows the whistle, the last one in line should run forward.
  • Do this until everyone has run and then let them finish the circle.
