Volleyball drills for technique attack / smash / spike / hitting

  • On one side of the field there is a six in full formation.
  • On the other side are 3 players.
  • Behind the 3 players stand the servers.
  • Exercise:
    • Servers serve the ball, the 6 team defends this ball and plays out the rally.
    • The 3-man team may defend and also rally.
  • Point count:
    • Service error, 1 point for the team that was set up.
    • Ball on ground by the 3 team, point for the essayed team.
    • Good service, but rally won by 3-player, point for 3-player.
    • IF 3-TAL has 3 points three move on, if TEAM has 12 points, 3-tal and all servers must push up 5x.
drawing 3 against 6 (practise rallying)
  • Goal:
    • Technically good attacks.
  • Need:
    • 4/5 players, enough balls.
    • 1 player stands on the distributor position (between position 2 and 3).
    • 1 player stands on the other side of the net to return the ball.
    • 2 or 3 attackers on outside position.
    • SV plays the ball directly overhand to position 4.
    • 1 attacker comes in and hits straight.
  • Points of Attention:
    • Getting ready:
      • Attacker stands outside the sideline and behind the 3-metre line.
    • Play:
      • Waiting for ball to come out of hands of playmaker (SV).
      • Then the attacking run:
        • Small step left.
        • Arms forward.
        • Big step right.
        • Arms backwards.
        • Connect left.
        • Feet parallel to the net.
        • Arms forward/up.
        • Come out of the knees.
        • Jumping.
        • Stroke arm backwards (like pitcher baseball).
        • Other arm pointing in direction of where you are hitting.
    • ROUTINE:
      • Balls are hit over the net.
      • Offender gets back in line with the attackers.
      • Offender other side of the net makes sure SV has enough balls.
      • After a few minutes turn through until everyone has been SV.

  • A-side (PL's, 1 slide, 1 libero, 1 SV)
    • Service 1 to 2 passers on the other side. (simple deep service, wrong service is 3 x push-ups).
    • SP to SV 2.
    • PL makes block jump and moves to UGP attack.
    • SV 2 set up to #4.
    • PL runs on from outside to inside and attacks straight through to #1 where service 1 defends.
  • B-side (1 slide, 3 x centre, 1 libero, 1 SV)
    • Service 1 to 1 passer across.
    • SP to SV 1.

drawing Service - SP - Attack
  • Organization:
    • 3 passers including a PL and the Libero on field A.
    • Playmaker on field A.
    • Serve and block p2 at field B.
    • Defenders on field B.
  • Execution:
    • Change service into pass in setup in attack on p4.
    • Change after 3x attacks on p4.
  • Expand:
    • Add a block p3.
    • Swap at 3x score.

  • 1 player at the net on position 2/3
  • 3 players in the backfield.
  • The player at the net puts the defense to work and has the freedom to touch each ball at least once up to a maximum of three times.
  • The defense makes sure that the ball reaches the player at the net in 1 or 2 times.
drawing Defending (4 people)
  • All on the 3 meter line facing the net.
  • If necessary divide in two halves.
  • In slow motion synchronise the attacking pass. (right-handed)
  • The next steps are in an arc towards the net; by doing this all at once in synchrony, they oblige each other to run in an arc:
    • Left small step; take arms to the front; start of forward force
    • Right big step; arms all the way back; deep in knees; accelerationof forward force
    • Left foot in front of the right (close step), with the foot parallel to the net; forward force is slowed down
    • Throw both arms up and push off with 2 feet up; forward force is converted into upward force
    • Right arm backwards like baseball/arrow pitcher; left arm points in direction of desired ball path; strike ball and land through knees approx. 0.5m in front of the net

  • Group on 5 and 6.
  • 5 throws ball towards 3 and players on 6 set up from 3.
  • Players on 5 attack on 4.
  • 5 gets the ball and 6 passes to 5.
  • Pay attention to high quality. Arms well up, straight up, high jumps.
  • Ditto:
    • But then from 6 and 1, attack on 2.
  • Ditto:
    • Fixed setter, players 6 play the ball BH to setter, players 5 attack on 4.
  • Ditto:
    • But then attack on 2, from 1.
  • Variation diagonal/straight through.
  • It is not about the attack itself but about the timing and technique.
  • First of all, again a short explanation of the attacking run and pass. (if necessary mark with tape/feet)
  • Trainer/playmaker gives setup after playing the ball 1 to 6 times for himself.
  • Player waits with walking until the ball leaves the hands of the distributor/trainer.
  • Explanation and feedback on offensive run/pass.
  • Player takes ball and walks to the other side of the court to the right front position.
  • Here stands another coach/player who gives a setup WITHOUT waiting.

  • Ball route:
    • Player 1 serves to player 3.
    • 3 passes the ball on 2/3 to player 4.
    • Player 4 gives set-up.
    • Player 3 comes for the attack.
    • He hits straight ahead or diagonally.
    • Agree on beforehand.
    • Server (player 1) defends this ball.
  • Walking route:
    • After player 1 serves, player 2 serves.
    • Player 3 and 4 exchange tasks.
    • When one side has served twice (player 1 and 2).
    • Player 3 and 4 start serving.
    • Player 1 and 2 attack and defend.
drawing Exercise 4 - Corona training
  • 2 on 2, each side passes, gives a setup and then an attack behind the 3 meter line.
  • The game is played on the whole field.
  • The ball is introduced through an overhand service from the field (the ball must return to the field quickly, so serve directed at a defender where the ball lands).
drawing Exercise 5 - Corona training
  • A player is at work. (player 4)
  • The other 3 players are lined up in different corners of the field. (see drawing)
  • They make sure that the player can defend balls.
  • Every time a player is down, it is the next player's turn.
  • The exercise is carried out on one half of the field.
  • Player 1 smashes into player 4, player 2 gives a short ball, player 3 smashes.
  • After 3 balls we rotate one place:
    • Player 4 to position player 2.
    • Player 2 to position player 1.
    • Player 1 to position player 3.
    • Player 3 to position player 1.
