Volleyball drills for technique block / net defense

  • Make trios with 1 ball
  • 2 players are at the net opposite each other.
  • The third player has the ball, and throws it above the net rim.
  • The two blockers will now duel
  • Play with points and ranking within the team.

A big mistake during blocking is that players mostly watch the ball. From the moment the ball leaves the playmaker until the moment of hitting the volleyball by the attacker, the ball is watched. However, the most information can be derived from the attacker. Where is the ball going to be hit, how are the shoulders? The task is to teach the players, after they have seen which attacker is served by the playmaker, to watch the attacker.

In this exercise the trainer is standing behind the pair that forms the blocking. The trainer throws the ball over the net and the attackers hit the ball. Blocking players can no longer follow ball and they have to watch the attacker. Of course, the trainer can apply further technical improvements, such as the position of the hand, what to do after the block landing, and the way of landing

if the trainer want to keep his or her hand free to apply technical improvements while the rest of the exercise continues, the attacker can throw the ball one by one, or the playmakers.

Variations are:
1: only an outside block
2: with mid block
3: also position attackers at the mid position

It is important the players focus on the attacker.

Goal:

Improving the pass by positioning the shoulders in the playing direction

Pay close attention in exercises:

  • Pass has to be high so player can catch ball 'overarm'.
  • Pass to the right, right foot forward
  • Pass to the left, left foot forward
  • 'Eyes' of the shoulders in playing direction

The exercise:

  • trios with 1 ball
  • 1 an 2 are next to each other, not too close to the net.
  • 3 is opposite 1, in the back of the field.
  • 1 throws straight to 3, and 3 throws diagonally to 2.
  • 2 catches and throws straight to 3, and 3 throws diagonally to 1.
  • 3 keeps moving.

core-1

Block defense with dive

blocking
- 1 first blocks middle and then left forward
 - turn around after block and defend attack by 3
- then defends (in dive) short ball by 5
- 2 is the next
Rotate: - 1 to short ball
 - 3 to blocking
 - 5 to attack

Left and right to 1 side of the net a line of attackers, playmaker on fixed position (right forward), passer left back. Three blockers on the other side of the net (right forward, middle, and left forward).

Ball is thrown from the other side to   passer, passes to SV, sets up alternately to the attackers; mhidden blocker can only leave when set up has been played.

Points of attention:

  • position of the hands (turned to position 6); place arms over the net (lock ball)
  • jump after the attacker jumps
  • middle player properly connects; outside blocker puts up block from outside to inside (never the other way around)
Practice on defense, technical attack and drop balls.

  • Practice defensive techniques.
  • Improve technical attack techniques.
  • Practice with drop balls.
  • 1 side with block.
drawing Attacking exercise with 1-man block
  • The attacker puts a block.
  • The thrower hits over this.
  • The libero or passer passes the ball to the server.
  • The server passes the ball to the attacker who just blocked.
  • The thrower puts a block and the attacker hits straight through to the defender, who defends for himself.
  • Passing: passer becomes attacker -> attacker becomes backup defender -> defender becomes backup thrower -> thrower becomes backup passer.
drawing Attack variation
  • Groups of 3 people of approximately equal height.
  • The thrower pays attention to the correct steps:
    • Short, Long, Connect, Take arms with jump.
  • Attacker asks for higher/lower ball to get the timing right.
  • Defender determines start of exercise.
Setting:
  • One ball per 3-team.
  • 2 Blockers face each other at the net.
  • Setter next to 1 of the blockers.
Rotation:
  • Defender determines start, countdown = 3-2-1 block => try => hands touch each other above the net.
  • Defender => shuffle backwards to about 5-6 meter position -speed !
  • Attacker => fast to the 3 meters ready for attack.
  • Throw up => almost straight up on indication of height attacker.
  • Attacker => straight up calm stroke.
  • Defender => Pass up and catch.
  • Thrower to other side of the net.
  • Same principle but mirrored.

  • 5x attack per person so 10x toss up.
  • Mutual exchange, 3x total, everyone is the thrower once.
drawing Attack Pass
Practice attack run a few times with a few runs beforehand.

Attention => short long short, slant run, take your arms into the jump, try to get as high as possible.

Then do this exercise in pairs:
  • 1 person throws up
  • 1 person does attack pass with timing => catch as high as possible with 2 hands.
  • Thrower pay attention to correct steps: Short, Long, Connect, take arms with jump.
  • Catcher asks for higher / lower ball so timing is right.
1) First phase: Run-up from about 3 meter line => 5x good jump timing, then change
2) Second phase: Start with fake-block, fast backwards, around the pawn => Throw-up => 5x good jump timing then change.
drawing Attack Pass
  • Players on the cabinets play a fast ball.
  • The net blocks and the back players pass the ball.
  • Play it out.
  • Bring balls to basket and distribute balls to cabinets.
drawing Defense and resolution
  • Trainer in the middle holding up ball to block.
  • Both blocks in the middle.
  • Connect on the side.
  • Under the net, block again.
drawing Block and connect
Goal is action block, good exit and then attack

  • Block middle
  • Block outside
  • Good exit
  • Passing back overhead
  • Attack to a corner
