Volleyball drills for setting / overarm technique

Two players

  • player 1 plays the ball overhand to player 2
  • while player 2 throws the ball immediately to player 1,
  • so play 1 ball constantly + throw and catch 1 ball at the same time.
  • playing high and throwing fast and aimed: time!
  • 2 players/1 hoop
  • Player A hits the ball over the net from the hoop she is at 2m from the net,
  • he runs behind and catches the ball after a bounce,
  • then he dribbles twice and tips the ball back into the hoop;
  • player B catches the ball and performs the exercise as well
  • Challenge: 1 point when the ball bounces the edge and 2 points when it falls in

- 1 defender starts behind the back line
- C plays high ball in the field
- 1 comes in and plays overhead to S
- S set-up to where attacker is standing
- attack straight ahead, attacker gets the ball
- 1 becomes attacker and 2 defender
VARIATION 1: Harder hit ball, with fixed libero in defence.
VARIATION 2: IDEM to 1, but with block after your attack.

  • Player A serves the ball to player C.
  • Player C passes the ball to player B.
  • Player B sets up the ball.
  • Player D attacks.


Goal: try to attack/play 3rd ball on the mats (straight or diagonal).

After each ball move one place in your own group.

Extension: When there are enough players, one could also choose to place a block.

2 teams. 2 playing fields.

Setup zone and passing zone.

  • Ball must be passed into the second zone.
  • Ball is passed into the setup zone.
  • Setup is done behind the 3 meter line (ball is hit standing up over the net).
  • Setup player walks over the line of action
  • Pass player goes to setup zone.
  • New passer can only enter the field when old setup has passed the backline.
  • 2 balls per pair.
  • One throws the ball, the other plays back the BH.
  • Throw in the second ball when the first one comes back.
  • Together they keep 2 balls in the air: so twice as much ball-contact as when working with 1 ball.
  • Variations/expansions: throw something left/right (move > stand still), throw short/long.

  • 2 balls per pair.
  • One throws the ball, the other plays back the BH.
  • Throw in the 2nd ball when the 1st one comes back.
  • Together they keep 2 balls in the air:
    • So twice as much ball contact as when working with 1 ball.
  • Variations/expansion: throw something to the left/right (move > stand still), throw something short/long.
  • Pairs facing each other with a net in between
  • There is a cone under the net
  • Players play the ball overhead in front of themselves and then pass the ball to others
  • After playing, they tap the cone under the net and get back to their feetbutton

  • Passing over:
  • Ball always goes to the middle player
  • Overhand pass. Middle player must play backwards and turn around immediately!
  • Pass underhand. Middle player must play backwards and turn around immediately!
  • Peppering where the pass goes to the middle player who sets it up.
  • Diving balls indicated by middle player
