Volleyballexercises for technique serving

Groups and Positions
  • Divide players into two groups: Passers (Liberos, DS, and Outsides) and Servers.
  • Passers form the receiving line.
  • Servers are divided into two lines and must alternate lines at all times.
Execution
  • The drill starts with a topspin serve from the box by a coach or player.
  • Followed by a serve from zone 1 and a serve from zone 5.
  • Serves alternate between these zones.
  • Passers must pass the ball to the target in zone 3.
  • After 9 serves, the receiving line rotates.
Variations
  • Instead of a target in zone 3, position setters to set the ball to targets in zones 4 and 2.
Goal
  • Establish responsibility zones for each player on the reception line for serves originating from different zones of the court.

Task
  • Form pairs with one ball per duo.
  • The trainer places cones in different colours in the middle of the court, as many as there are pairs.
  • Always aim at a specific side of the cone, the trainer indicates which side:
    • Right of the cone
    • Straight ahead
    • Left of the cone
    • Diagonal
    • In front of the cone (short)
    • Behind the cone (deep)
  • For a successful task: move the cone 1 metre to make the area smaller.
  • For an unsuccessful task: move the cone 0.5 metres back to make the area larger.
  • Challenge: Bring your cone as close as possible to the respective line of the court.
  • Execution: 5 minutes of serving.
  • The pair with the smallest area after this time is the winner.

Setup
  • Divide the group into two teams.
  • The trainer is positioned on the side of the passers and catches the passes.
  • Team A starts with serving, and Team B will be passing.
  • After 15 points, switch the servers and passers.
  • The trainer will now also catch passes on the other side of the net.
Scoring
  • Good serve that scores: +1 point.
  • Good pass that is caught by the trainer: +1 point.
  • Faulty serve that goes out or into the net: -1 point.
  • Faulty pass: -1 point.

Setup
  • Short serve towards cones.
  • From the bench to two courts.
  • Four positions for quick step.
Execution
  • Players perform a short serve towards the cones.
  • After the serve, they quickly move to the next position with a quick step.

Execution
  • Work in pairs with one ball and the net in between.
  • Start at the 3-meter line and serve gently to each other.
  • Focus on the toss and concentration.
  • Increase the distance if successful.
  • If the ball can be caught, increase the distance again.
  • If the ball falls, move one meter forward.
Setup
  • Divide the team into two groups. Each group takes position on one side of the net.
Execution
  • One side serves, while the other side positions three players as receivers.
  • The receivers attempt to pass the ball upwards and catch it on their own side.
  • Servers take turns serving.
  • After each catch, a new receiver enters the field for the one who caught the ball.
  • Play until 10 points are reached.
  • The servers score a point if the ball is not caught.
  • The receivers score a point if the ball is caught.
  • An incorrect service does not count.
  • After one round, the teams switch sides.
  • In the second round, they play with two receivers instead of three.
Execution
  • Serving is done simultaneously on both sides (or as simultaneously as possible).
  • The defender provides the pass towards the setter position (position 3).
  • At the setter position (position 3), the ball is caught.
  • Players move along the blue lines.
  • For larger teams, players can be added to the waiting area.
  • With more than 10 players, the speed of the exercise is lost.
Objective
  • Ensure good serve reception.
  • Serves must be straight, but the server should aim to score.
  • The passer is not well-trained if they only receive easy balls during training.
  • The serving pressure can naturally be increased during the exercise.
Execution
  • Form two teams where each player has a ball.
  • After the starting signal, three extra balls are thrown into the field.
  • Only overhand serves are allowed.
  • When the time stops, everyone releases all the balls.
  • The team with the fewest balls on their side wins.
Execution
  • Three servers stand on one side of the net.
  • On the other side, there are two lines with the remaining players.
  • One player from each line enters the court, so there are a total of two players on the court.
  • The servers take turns serving.
  • The two players on the court pass the ball to the other player.
  • That player sets the ball, after which the third ball goes over the net.

Execution
  • Place a mat randomly in each court.
  • A group is ready to serve on both sides.
  • Serve the ball onto the mat.
  • Follow your ball and join the line on the opposite side.
  • Try to hit the mat as often as possible.
Objective
  • Players should try to stand as close to the backline as possible.
  • If they are unsuccessful, they may stand closer to the net.
Four Players Static
  • Two servers at the service area, one receiver, one catcher.
  • The server serves, the receiver passes the ball to the catcher, who catches the ball and rolls it back to the server.
Dynamic
  • Same as static, but the player follows the ball.
  • The server becomes the receiver, the receiver becomes the catcher, and so on.
Six Players Static
  • See four players.
Dynamic
  • The server serves the ball and follows it.
  • The receiver passes the ball to the catcher.
  • The rightmost player becomes the catcher.
  • The server shifts to the left.
  • The catcher becomes the server.
  • If this does not work, one receiver becomes a reserve.

This activity is fun to do and brings a lot of enjoyment and competition! Relays naturally involve competition. This activity also simulates the stress factor that comes with serving.

Execution
  • The players are divided into equal teams and lined up at the serving area of the same side of the court.
  • The first player of a team serves and retrieves their own ball.
  • After tagging the next player, this player goes to serve, and so on.
  • It is important for a player to serve quickly, but it must also be error-free, because otherwise the ball must be retrieved and served again!
  • If the teams are small, it is fun to let everyone serve two or three times.
