Volleyball drills for setting / overarm technique

  • Divide the team into two groups and have them form two rows facing each other on the 3 meter line.
  • Have the players play over the net and then run around the net post to join the other group.
  • Place a speedfoot ladder on one side, parallel to the sideline, and have the players do an exercise through the ladder before joining the row.
  • It is possible to extend this with block jumps, attacking passes or strength exercises.
  • Important is that the ball should not fall on the ground, communication is important.
  • If necessary, add a sanction when the ball falls on the ground.
  • Alternate between underhand and overhand.
  • Basically an exercise to play well BH, but also with an "attacking idea".
  • Organisation:
    • Line up 2 players with ball and 1 without ball on position 5/6 on field B.
    • Line-up of 4 players on position 6 on field A.
    • There is also a player on position 2/3 and at the net on position 4.
  • Working method:
    • On field B the player in front throws/strikes the ball to the first players on field A and then closes the gap on field A.
    • The OHpasses theball high to the players on 2/3.
    • The latter plays the ball BH toposition 4, first going to "attack coverage" and then taking position 4.
    • As soon as the ball leaves 2/3, the player on 4 moves to the 3m-line.
    • Then, after a short "run", this player plays the ball BH to the player without the ball on field B.
    • This player catches the ball and closes in at the back of field B.
  • Field in 2 parts.
  • 1st half of the field defending 10 balls thrown by the trainer.
  • 2nd half of the field self setting training.
  • Organization:
    • Divide the group over the 2 fields.
    • 2 players on pos 2 with 1 ball, 1 on 4, 1 on 5 and 1 on 1
  • Execution
:Ball is played from p2 BH to 4.
On p4 the ball is hit technically to p1.
This one defends the ball on 3m p3 and at that moment the player on p5 comes to play the ball BH to p2.
And it starts all over again.

  • Running: from p2 to p4 to p5 to p1 and again to p2
  • Half of the players stand in a line 2 metres apart.
  • Preferably with a wall at their back.
  • The other players pass this line in turn at 4 metres from the thrower.
  • There is no net in between.
  • They are given a ball to return overhead.
  • Then they move sideways to the next starter.
  • Go down the row and come back to the beginning.
  • If there are enough players, a second row can be set up in mirror image.
  • Then the players who return the ball go back along this row and have then walked a circle.
  • (Row players 1 stand with their backs to row players 2, to throwers 1 and 2 stand with their faces to each other).
  • After that you can alternate between the groups and do the same with underhand return.
  • As a variation, use different throwing distances.
  • Important points of attention: throwing the ball neatly, moving sideways, sitting low when playing OH, high ball tempo.
  • Organization:
    • Divide 2 quads on both fields.
    • Players stand on 3m-line.
    • The first player on field A has a ball.
  • Implementation:
    • Player on field A with the ball throws it with 2 hands from the neck over the net, runs under the net over the backline and joins behind it.
    • The first player on field B catches the ball and throws it back and runs under the net as well.
    • Regularly change the way of throwing: with: right hand, with left hand and throws from chest height.
    • After 2 or 3 minutes let the bra play. Now it is no longer necessary to walk over the back line.
    • After 2 minutes, make a block jump before passing under the net.
    • Then after the block jump, move sideways and make another block jump.
  • Attention point:
    • The rally must be kept going.
    • In case BH cannot be played, OH may be played.
  • Organization:
    • Divide the group over the 2 fields.
    • 2 players on pos 2 with 1 ball, 1 on 4, 1 on 5 and 1 on 1
  • Execution:
    • Ball is played from p2 BH to 4.
    • On p4 the ball is hit technically to p1.
    • The latter defends the ball at 3m p3 and at that moment the player on p5 comes and plays the ball Bh to p2.
    • And it starts all over again.
  • Walk:
    • P2 to p4.
    • P4 to p5.
    • P5 to p1.
    • P1 to p2.
  • Organisation: Make three teams with one ball.
  • Execution:
    • 2 players stand opposite each other at approx. 5m.
    • The third player is "distributor" and stands to the right of the passer.
    • Player 1 plays brace to 2nd player and he passes the ball to the right, where the Sv is standing.
    • This gives player 2 a setup, which is attacked on player 1.
    • Meanwhile, Sv runs to the right side of player 1 to receive the pass there.
  • Organisation:
    • 3 players on p2, p3 and p4.
    • 2 players on p5/p6 and p6/p1.
    • Other players with ball on p6.
  • Execution:
    • BH to p4 and follow ball, from p4 BH to p5/p6, follow ball backwards.
    • From p5/p6 OH to p3 and follow through, etc.
    • At p2 catch and connect to p6.
