Hockeyexercises for technique passing

Last update: january 2026
drawing Exercise without purpose
Basic techniques -> Push pass out of the run.
  • The trainer makes 3-pairs -if you can't work out the numbers of 4-pairs-; 2 players on one side of the playing field, 1 on the other side.
  • The side of the pair always starts with the ball.
  • Player 1 starts by floating to the other side.
  • Halfway across the playing field he gives a push pass to player 2 on the opposite side.
  • Player 2 takes the ball and does the same as Player 1 and gives the ball with a push pass to Player 3 etc.
  • The player who passed the ball first runs on to Player 2's spot, Player 2 to Player 3's spot etc.
Points of attention:
  • Drive the ball well in front of your body -i.e. not next to it or behind it- -> Look well over the ball.
  • Drive the ball well outside with your left elbow.
  • The exercise must be performed technically well before you can increase speed.
drawing Exercise on target
Handball -one touch-.
  • Player blue begins to move in a lateral direction. So the initiative lies with this player.
  • Player red pushes the ball straight to player blue.
  • Player blue rebounds the ball sideways.
  • Player red has moved on, takes the ball and scores.
  • Having scored, you rebound and visa versa.
Points of attention:
  • Player blue must make sure he is well turned in at the time of handball.
  • Make sure you have your stick well in front of your body at the moment of handball.
  • Also pay extra attention when rounding on goal, preferably a flat.
drawing Practice with the beam
Passing through the bar

Organization:
  • Divide the group into 4 groups
  • Each group works on 1 side of the field
  • Put 2/ 3 players at the back line -blue triangle- 2 meters from the bar
  • Put 2/ 3 players at the middle line -red three corners- 2 meters from the bar
  • The balls are with the players on the center line
Execution:
  • The player with the ball plays to the player on the back line, through the bar
  • The player on the back line takes up and plays the ball back to the player on the middle line, via the bar
  • The player on the center line picks up, drives the ball to the circle and scores
  • The blue player moves to the red player's spot and the red player moves to the blue player's spot
  • The red player first takes the ball out of the goal and brings it back where the other balls are
Points of attention:
  • Playing hard on the bar
  • Make sure you have a good sharp angle so the ball arrives at the other player as well
drawing Tip-in and in out running
Two separate exercises that you can both do for 10 min

  • First: the explanation of the tip-in exercise
  • B starts running around the pawns and accelerates towards A when he gets to the goal
  • A gives a hard, aimed pass in the direction of the goal
  • B tips the ball so that it changes direction
  • Then they change places
Other exercise
  • We are going to practise running out
  • A is the right defence player who wants to play the ball somewhere
  • B is the right center and he is going to run an in out.
  • He starts in the middle of the pitch and wants to pass to A
  • He accelerates towards the sideline A can choose whether or not to give the ball
  • If he does not give the ball then A completes his line and comes back to where he started and then runs an in-out again
  • If A passes the ball B takes the ball and may score in the goal.

drawing Pass tempo 2 touch
  • A is ready with the ball
  • B comes running towards the ball.
  • A passes the ball to B.
  • B receives the ball
  • A runs on and gets the ball back from B.
  • B takes the ball on the pass.
  • They touch the ball only 2 times.
  • A receives the ball again,
  • B runs in to the deep and gets the ball back from A.
  • A also touches the ball twice, accepts and plays on.
  • B takes the ball in the depth and runs into the circle and rounds the goal.
  • Exercise on 2 sides.
    • If it goes well, put 1 defender in between to put pressure on the ball and if they intercept, they can score in the little goal on their side.

drawing Offer in-out
  • Extension of exercise 1 of this training.
  • A passes the ball to B.
  • A moves to the outside to get the ball back there.
  • There is no space there so they accelerate on the pawn back to the middle and get the ball from B.
  • B must look at what A is doing and judge what is the best moment to pass the ball.
  • Let A do this a number of times and then put in a defender.
  • B must then think about when they want to pass the ball
  • This may be when A runs to the outside, that they give the ball when they thinks they can, or that they wait for A to speed up and then give the ball.
  • B should therefore start thinking and see what the best moment is
  • Set up on both sides

drawing Walk In
  • A passes the ball to B
  • B receives the ball.
  • A runs wide to the side makes eye contact with B.
  • B gives a hard hit in the direction of A.
  • A takes the ball in the running
    • The ball lands on her backhand and she takes it in that way.
  • Accelerates to the circle, lines up the ball and rounds.
    • Set up on both sides.
  • On the other hand, you receive the ball on your forehand and turn open to take it with you.

  • B takes the ball in the depth and runs into the circle and rounds to goal.
  • Set up exercise on 2 sides.

  • He starts in the middle of the field and wants to offer himself for A.
  • He accelerates towards the sideline A may choose whether he wants to give the ball or not.
  • If he doesn't give the ball, A finishes his line further and comes back to where he started and then runs again on another in-out.
  • If A passes, B takes the ball and is allowed to score on the goaltender.
drawing Controlling, looking, passing
  • Players outside the box should replay as often as possible.
  • The pass must always pass through the box.
  • The players inside the box must try to intercept the ball.
  • As soon as the players inside the box have intercepted the ball, they should replay as often as possible inside the box.
  • Each time they have replayed 3 times, someone outside the box may enter the box to recapture the ball.
  • As soon as they succeed, they will play to someone outside the box and it will start over again, so at least one player must always remain outside the box to be able to play.
  • The field can be larger or smaller, there can be more or less players inside and outside the box.
drawing outnumbered

Make 2 teams.

  • Both teams have their 'own' course, where they can score points (for example by playing over 5 times in their own course).
  • The other team is allowed to conquer the ball in the other box, but not everyone from the other team is allowed to enter the other box.
    • The number of players of the other team -1.
  • As soon as blue has captured the ball, blue will go to his own square as soon as possible and will play over there as often as possible.
  • There may be 3 players of red in the blue box.
  • See example: in team red there are 4 players, so 3 players of blue are allowed to enter the red box.
drawing Introduction/warming-up backhand control while running
  • All players are facing the back line.
  • Player 1 plays the ball in the backhand of player 2.
  • Player 1 catches up with the other players on the left.
  • Player 2 plays the ball into player 3's backhand.
  • Player 2 overtakes the other player on the left.
  • Player 3 plays the ball into player 1's backhand.
  • Continue until you reach the back line and turn around.
  • Points of attention:
    • Make sure everyone keeps watching the ball at all times. Especially when the ball is behind you and at that moment the ball is played to you.
    • Make sure you always keep moving.
drawing Open and closed receptions

open and closed receptions

  • Number one calls "open" or "closed" and then plays the ball to number two.
  • Number two comes running into the ball and takes it on according to what was called.
  • Then number two calls "open" or "closed" and plays the ball to number three.
  • Number three enters the ball and takes it on according to what was called again.
  • Then number three runs over the back line into the circle and plays it at the head of the circle to number four.
  • Number four finishes on target.
