Basketball drills
This exercise is intended to teach the basics of HELP defense
Explanation
- Explain weak side/strong side.
- Explain 3 positions: man with ball, strong side, weak side.
- Make pairs: 1 attacker, 1 defender.
- Stand in attack.
- Put defenders down.
Practicing
- Practice dry passing only static.
- Send to the baseline!
- Swap out the help:
- By calling
- Everyone takes a position on the field!
- You are going to focus on:
- Defending between the man and the basket.
- Free running. ( in-out)
- Always pass.
- Everyone has a ball.
- Everyone starts dribbling in a certain box.
- If your ball is tapped away, you have to fetch it and score on the other basket.
- When you have scored, you may return to the box.
- You make 2 teams divided over 2 baskets.
- The first to reach the proposed number of scores wins.
- The losing team does a half-killer.
- Parties with different assignments/restrictions.
- Please note:
- Walk freely.
- Do not dribble blindly.
- Pass well.
- Pivot.
- Talking.
- 3x3 without dribbling. (1 basket)
- First 10 passes.
- Both teams on the back line. (on stomach)
- Trainer puts ball in play via shot or bounce. (Quick positioning, who will attack?).
- Just play to the 10 (end game).
- Two or three teams. (teams)
- Per pair or trio 1 ball.
- 1 shooter, 1 (or 2) rebounder(s).
- Shooter shoots (from free throw line, or lower position), then sprints to centre line.
- Rebounder catches ball, passes ball to shooter. (Good jump stop, correct distance, call for ball).
- Shooter 5 scores in total, then new shooter.
- Team of which first all shooters have scored 5 times, wins!
- 2 teams.
- Behind the baseline each team has 6 pots.
- If you score, you may add one of the other teams' pots to your own.
- First team with 9 pots behind its baseline wins.
- Left lay up.
- Left jump stop - cross over.
- Left lay back.
- Free throws.
Exercise
- 3 men at the bucket, coach at the free throw line.
- Take free throw.
- Outlet to the side, other two rebounding or taking it.
- Pass to outlet. (Never in the middle!)
- Outlet dribbles to centre, other two split left-right.
- To basket across.
- Cutting from free throw line.
- Outlet good jump stop and tight pass.
Starting position
- All players with a ball on the baseline.
Explanation
- Crossover: Good low position and change of speed.
- Behind the back.
- Through the legs.
Exercise
- Zigzag to the other side.
- Change of direction at line basket-basket.
With 3 men on the back line and the middle having the ball
- The middle passes to a man
- Runs after the ball.
- Who passes to the man on the other side
- Also runs after the ball.
- They do this while running to the basket on the other side.
- When someone is close enough to the basket, the man runs a lay-up.
NOTE: no ball on the ground, so the other must rebound (even when scoring)!
Everyone in the trio must have scored once.
If that takes more than 6 attempts, then they all have to do 10 pushups
- Make sure there are two balls for each player. Let the players get an extra ball themselves.
- Place the extra basketballs against the wall, behind the baseline.
Exercise 1
- The player starts from the triple-threat position.
- The player dribbles forward with the ball to the center line.
- Player dribbles backwards with the ball to the baseline.
- Points of Attention:
- Player pushes the ball forward
- Player takes the ball back with his fingertips.
Exercise 2
- Player dribbles with two basketballs to the center line.
- Player dribbles two basketballs to the baseline, backwards.
Each player has nrs from 1-5
- Run a break (lines) for the other side.
- Nr goes for shot.
- If you miss, the rest of the players have to rebound and score.
- Quickly take over and go to the other side where nr 2 takes a shot.
- If wrong rebound and finish.
Etc etc for 3,4 and 5. May be with a pass in between.
