Basketballexercises for technique defense

  • 3 teams of 3 players
  • 3 players in the middle
  • Attacking
  • Defense up to the center line, even after ball loss
drawing 3 by 3 by 3
  • 2 players on offense.
  • 2 players on defense.
  • 2 players at the free throw line.
  • 2 players at the level of the other free throw line.
  1. Play 2 against 2 until there is a score or stop.
  2. Defense gives outlet pass to player at height free throw line.
  3. These go 2-for-2 to other side of the court.
  4. Offense becomes defense and returns.
  5. Defense goes to height free throw line.
Variation: can also go 3-on-3.

Note: ball entered behind baseline, with defense.
drawing 2 on 2, get back
  • 1 defender under each goal.
  • 2 groups at the center line.
  • 1 against 1 on each side of the field.
  • Defense stays put when scoring.
  • To score first 10 times.
  • Right and left.
drawing 1 vs. 1, full court
This exercise sounds simple but it certainly is not:
  • The idea is for the player with the ball to get past a 100% giving defender in 3 dribbles.
  • The scoring player stays put, misses then goes out and the defender may attack against a new person.
  • The goal is for the player to give everything during this exercise.
  • Here the attacker is forced to be explosive and use his whole body.
drawing Three step king of court
  • Prior to the exercise, we first stretch and run a suicide.
  • The ball is in the middle.
  • Two persons run backwards on the starting signal to the back line, then first to get hold of the ball on the middle line.
  • A 1-on-1 situation then arises here in which the person with the ball attacks and the other must defend.
drawing Warming up
4-4
  • Attacker with ball may not put a foot in the Bucket.
  • Attacker may only shoot 3-pointers when free.
  • 1 point for foot in the Bucket and 1 point if 3-point shot hits the hoop.
  • After 20 seconds, interception or point of attackers switch attack-defense.

See the diagram below.
  • Depending on the number of players on your team, make three or four lines along the baseline and the same number of lines just above the free throw line.
  • Each player along the baseline has a ball and goes to the perimeter player.
  • First 3 quarters: sprint
  • Last quarter: slides - 1 hand high for defending the shot
Finish high dribble so force towards baseline.

drawing Defending: close out - basic
  • 2 players start at the head of the paint.
  • Between them is a chair with a ball.
  • They first sprint to the baseline, the first to the ball may attack in the paint.
  • Continues until there is a score.
drawing 1-1 Drill in The Paint
Players will stand offense and defense, facing each other on the three-point line.
  • Then an alternating 1 vs 1 situation is started.
  • Offense is going to provoke the defense through jab steps, pump fakes and other feints.
  • Only when the defender steps on the wrong leg, steps up from his defense before the shot or when there is no reaction, a shot may be fired/passed to score.
The goal of the exercise is to read your defense better and not to lose your triple threat by dribbling immediately.
drawing 1 vs 1 (challenging defender)
  • Players distribute to the bucket.
  • Opposite them will be defenders.
  • Attackers are going to take care of 8 to 10 passes -straight- while defense tries to get in between.
  • Attackers are allowed to make in outs but no screens. So they really stay on their own position.
  • The attacker with the ball is allowed to make 1 dribble to get the ball to his teammate and make a good pass.
  • After 8 to 10 well-crafted passes there is a scoring attempt after which offense and defense will switch.
drawing Defense pressure with passes
  • Start with 3 on the 123 spots.
  • Ball is on the 1.
  • Read and react to own option.
  • Later add 2 defenders, ball at defender mat pass to attackers.
  • For delay, attackers must have passed 1 first.
drawing 3v2
5 attackers and 5 defenders.
  • Defenders stand as a zone and start communicating where the ball is and who has the ball.
  • Player opposite the ball makes a closeout, the rest move so that they are in the direct pass line or are a good help side.
  • Attackers may take 1 step to pass and overhead passes are allowed.
This drill is really about communication.
After 10/15 passes, a shot may be attempted and communication is also important here.
SHOT must be called so that a good boxing out occurs.
