Basketball drills for technique dribbling

  • Setup:
    • Per 2 players 1 ball
    • 1 player baseline
    • 1 player at free throw line with ball

  • Player baseline runs to other player and receives pass.
  • Land, crossover step, 3 dribbles, jump stop, pivot.
  • Pass to next player.
  • Across the length of the court.
  • Variations:
    • Catch, spin, reverse pivot - heel lift when pivoting-.
    • Front stop, half pivot, pivot forward.
    • Jump and turn in the air, turn and face.

  • Tag without ball on the center line.
  • If tapped, you must stand still -ball on ground- as jammer.
  • From baseline to baseline, ticker may not go beyond head bucket.
  • Last one remaining wins.
  • Everyone on baseline.
  • 3 defenders.
    • 1 at level of free throw line.
    • 1 at mid-line.
    • 1 at the free throw line.
  • Defense stays on their line, may deviate a bit.
  1. Players dribble across.
  2. Whoever loses ball becomes defender.
  3. Group of defenders gets bigger and bigger.

  • 2-3 players catch the ball.
  • The other players line up around the 3 point line.
  • 2 balls.
  1. Players run regular layups.
  2. Coach stands under the basket and each time a player arrives, raises a specific number of fingers.
  3. The players must then get that number right.
  4. This teaches them not to look at the ball.

  • Everyone has a ball.
  • One person is the catcher and stands on the center line, the rest stands on the free throw line and tries to reach the other free throw line without being caught.
  • All normal rules apply such as run and second dribble.
  • If you are tagged, you also become tagged.
  • The teacher sets out three areas of approximately equal size with pawns.
  • It is best to use the volleyball lines (see map).
  • There are three sections (see map):
  • Left: barons square (losers square)
  • Middle: princes section (neutral section)
  • Right: king of the court (winner section)
  • All students stand in the middle section.
  • With a signal from the teacher the game starts.
  • All pupils have to try to tap/strike the ball of another pupil out of the box.
  • If you succeed you move one square to the right.
  • If your ball is knocked away you move up one square to the left.
  • If you hit/tap someone's ball out of the box on the right you score a point.
  • If your ball is knocked out of the winner's box you lose all your points.
  • If your ball is knocked out of the left box nothing happens and you stay standing.
  • When the teacher gives the final signal the person with the most points is king of the court and he/she has won.

Players gather on the right or left side of the center line.
The first two have a ball.
There are two catchers under the basket.
From the center line you dribble to the basket and make a lay-up.
The catcher catches the ball and passes it to the next player in line.
You do this until you have scored 15 times and then you change sides.




  • Players divide along the length of the field, so they stand on a sideline.
  • They are going to perform this exercise in the width of the field.
  • In the middle of this field are scattered a number of pawns.
  • Everyone has a ball.
Exercise:
  • Players dribble to the pawns in the middle, there they hold the ball and pivot 5x.
  • Then they dribble on to the other side.
  • Once there, turn around and dribble with the ball as fast as possible to the starting point.
  • Then do it all over again.

  • Stand with the whole group in a circle in the middle of the field.
  • Each player 1 ball.
  • Dribble normal -hip height
  • Dribble low -below knee
  • Dribble extremely low -bounce no higher than ankle height
  • Dribble low -below knee
  • Dribble normal -hip height
  • Dribble extremely high -above shoulder
  • Dribble normal -hip height
  • Have the players sit while dribbling
  • Now have the players stand up dribbling
  • Have the players dribble sitting down again
  • Players now dribble between their legs
  • Have them stand again and make 8s between their legs, then ball around the waist as fast as possible, then the other way.
Notice:
  1. Each part can be done with both hands
  2. The coach acts as an example.

  • Starting lineup:
    • Each player 1 ball

    • Coach is clearly lined up to preview the drills
  • Progression:
    • Each exercise lasts 30 seconds and is performed with both right and left hands
    • Passing the ball around the body without dribbling
    • Legs spread, we hold the ball between the legs, one hand in front and one in back we unload the ball and change hands quickly
    • We make an eight movement around and through the legs without dribbling
    • We throw the ball up and catch it behind the back, first low and then higher and higher
    • Dribbling around 1 leg; 10 X and then around other leg, changing direction
    • At knee height next to body dribble left and right
    • Very low in front of body dribble left and right
    • Crossover in front of the body with 2 dribbles
    • Crossover in front of the body with 1 dribble - keep ball low
    • Stand still and dribble through the legs, front to back, with 1 dribble
    • Remaining still and dribbling through the legs, front to back
    • In an 8-formation dribble through the legs in both directions left and right
    • A v-dribble with 1 hand in front of the body left and right
    • In and out dribble in front of the body left and right
    • Beside the body from front to back dribble at knee height left and right
  • Progression:
    • Who can dribble through their legs the most?

  • Both offensive and defensive player fac the basket.
  • The attacker puts the ball on the defender's back.
  • When he takes it off, he goes to the basket very quickly.
