Basketball drills for technique dribbling

  • Setup:
    • 2 groups
    • At the level of the free throw line
  • First a v-cut, then get ball.
  • Pivot and shot.
  • Own rebound.
  • Connect on the other side.
  • Careful with pivoting on right foot.
  • Passing with right or left hand, depends on side.
  • 20 scores.
  • Variations:
    • Pivot and dribble to goal, lay-up
    • Straight to goal driven
    • Pivot and dribble to goal, jump stop
    • Reverse pivot and lay-up
    • Reverse pivot and shot

  • Setup:
    • All players 1 ball
    • In the three-point line
    • Everyone is ticker with ball
  • Tapping the ball
  • Whoever loses ball is out
  • When the group gets smaller make the circle smaller

  • 1 player baseline
  • 1 player at free throw line with ball.
  • Player baseline runs to other player and receives pass.
  • Land, crossover step, 3 dribbles, jump stop, pivot.
  • Pass to next player.
  • Across the length of the court.
Variations:

  • Catch, spin, reverse pivot - heel up when pivoting-.
  • Front stop, half pivot, pivot forward.
  • Jump and turn in the air, turn and face.

Small room with 4 baskets:
  • Run laps with lay-ups over all baskets.
  • After whistle press up, tap, plank, jump with ball held in hands.
  • After the whistle turn around and left.

  • After each ball is taken, an action is made to the basket. 
  • This can be done in a drive or with a shot.
  • When the attacker is stopped by a defender, he passes the ball to the outside and cuts to the basket, via the baseline he mans a free spot in the corner.
  • When a drive is initiated, the defense can either go into help defense, which always leaves someone free at the 3-point line. 
  • When the defense does not go into help defense, the attackers must run free in order to be able to receive the ball when the driver gets stuck.
  • Important is the speed between receiving the ball and the drive.

Exercise 1
  • The player starts from the triple-threat position, protecting the ball.

  • Points of interest:

    • Player dribbles below waist but above knee.

Exercise 2
  • Player starts again from triple-threat position.
  • The player takes five steps forward while dribbling.
  • After five steps the player jumps up from the last pass and stops again on two feet.
  • Points of attention:
    • Player pushes the ball forward with fingertips
    • Player looks in front of him
    • Player stays in balance after jumping
Exercise 3
  • The player starts again from the triple-threat position.
  • The player takes five steps forward.
  • After five steps the player grabs the ball and takes two steps forward as in the double counting rhythm.
  • Alternate with right foot first, then left foot.
  • Points of Attention:
    • Players must hold the ball when entering the two-count rhythm.

  • Make a circle with all the players.
  • Make sure each player has a ball.
  • Do several ball skills exercises.
  • Do the continuous rehearsal, with the players trying to imitate the trainer in the middle of the circle.

  • The player starts at the post next to the bucket.
  • Player dribbles to the basket
  • Variations:
    • The player stops on two feet = jumpshot
    • The player starts the two-count rhythm = lay-up
      • From the right side: first right foot, drop with left foot.
      • From the left side: first with left foot, then with right foot.
  • The player picks up his own rebound and dribbles around the pole.
  • The player zigzags through the posts.
  • The player then rejoins the line near the basket.
When there is a large group, this exercise can be done on both sides of the field.
  • Who is the first group to reach 20 scores, wins.

  • Player a does V-cut and gets ball from player b and stops in jump-stop.
  • He pivots (front left) with his left leg to the basket and gets into triple treath position.

  • Player c takes the rebound and goes to the other side for a shot at 45 degrees, after which he connects with the passers.

  • Slowly build up speed as a warming up,
  • Possibly let a player determine what the assignments are.
  • Do take a rest now and then.

  • Left to go, right back
  • Left/right (cross)
  • Backwards (2 times left, 2 times right)
  • Put the ball down (under ball back, pick up ball back and next line)
  • With press-ups (2x on the line), jumping, abs ect.


  • 1 man attack - 1 man defend
