Basketball drills for technique shooting

The players stand around the bucket or on the free throw line and try to score in the basket. Vary their position and distance.

Players dribble from the center line to the free throw line and try to score from there within 5 seconds.

  • 2 or 4 teams (1 or 2 fields)
  • Each team has 1 ball and is at the head of the bucket
  • Take turns shooting
  • If you score then you may go to the other basket to shoot a free throw
  • Is it touching, it is 1 point.
    • At 5 points the team has won
  • Possibly you can turn it into a conditioning training
  • When a shot is missed
  • There must then be run to the back line and back 
  • Starting at the rear line
    • Here you dribble between the cones
    • Keep the ball low
    • Speed is not so important
    • Do control the ball
  • At the center line make a cros over to the wing
  • Then make a jump shot

  • Distribute over 2 baskets
    • Ball bouncing straight up
    • Run to the center line and back
    • Then shoot ball
    • 2x from any spot and then move one spot through
  • 5 x 2 free throws = 10 free throws
  • Standard 50% = 5 hits out of 10
    • 5 or more points: standard achieved!
    • 4 points: jump 20 times as high as possible every time
    • 3 points: 40 x jump
    • 2 points: 40 x jump + 15 sit ups
    • 1 point: 40 x jumping + 30 sit ups
    • 0 points: 40 x jump + 40 sit ups




  • Twos: 
  • 3x10 shots. 
  • Shot outside the bucket player A, player B rebound.
  • Player A runs to midcourt.
  • Touches line with hand comes back gets the pass.
  • Shot. 10x. 
  • Then switch. 
  • 2nd time e.g. to sideline, 3rd time back line.

Number of exercises for novice archers:

  • One hand behind the back, ball on hand above head and stretch out (pay attention to followthrough, backspin), catching the ball with the same hand again
  • Shoot against the wall (again with 1 hand)
  • Shooting against the board (e.g. 5 times with 1 hand)
  • Distribute over the baskets, take as many shots as possible


2 rows, 1 ball per team

  • Player scores, rebound own ball, and passes to next player in line
  • Player who has scored runs to the other baseline to pick up a pilon and brings it back to the group
  • Group with the most pilons at the end wins
  • Requirements
    • Be able to dribble and stop in 1 time when receiving a pass
  • Aim
    • 1 time stop (jump stop), jump shot with attention to technique of the shot and finish against the board
  • Organisation
    • 1 passer in position 2, 
    • players dribble zigzag up to midline and then dribble to 1 position 
    • pass to 2
    • cutting inside until next to the ring, 
    • Receive the pass of 2
    • jump stop and finish with jumpshot.
      • Changing = finisher becomes passer, passer takes rebound and connects to baseline. Next player departs when predecessor has finished.
  • Teachingpoints
    • correct stop in 1 time, 
    • finish via shot from shooting-pocket to the board

  • All players shoot from multiple positions. 
  • Can be a game with players at other basket. 
  • For example: 10 points from each position. 
  • Scoring of the position under the board also using the board. 
  • Catch your own ball or give a good pass to the next in line. 
  • Make sure you are ready to score as a shooter. 
  • Use only 1 ball per basket

  • With 3 men on the back line and the middle one has a ball.
  • The middle one passes to a man and chases the ball.
  • The receiver keeps the ball behind him and the one who passed first takes the ball and passes on.
  • The person who has the ball behind his back runs behind the ball, picks it up at the receiver and passes on to the other side.
  • They do this while running to the basket on the other side.
  • If someone is close enough to the basket, the man plays a lay-up.
  • Make variations on the passing lines
