Volleyball drills for technique block / net defense

  • The attacker puts a block.
  • The thrower hits over this.
  • The libero or passer passes the ball to the server.
  • The server passes the ball to the attacker who just blocked.
  • The thrower puts a block and the attacker hits straight through to the defender, who defends for himself.
  • Passing: passer becomes attacker -> attacker becomes backup defender -> defender becomes backup thrower -> thrower becomes backup passer.
drawing Attack variation
  • Groups of 3 people of approximately equal height.
  • The thrower pays attention to the correct steps:
    • Short, Long, Connect, Take arms with jump.
  • Attacker asks for higher/lower ball to get the timing right.
  • Defender determines start of exercise.
Setting:
  • One ball per 3-team.
  • 2 Blockers face each other at the net.
  • Setter next to 1 of the blockers.
Rotation:
  • Defender determines start, countdown = 3-2-1 block => try => hands touch each other above the net.
  • Defender => shuffle backwards to about 5-6 meter position -speed !
  • Attacker => fast to the 3 meters ready for attack.
  • Throw up => almost straight up on indication of height attacker.
  • Attacker => straight up calm stroke.
  • Defender => Pass up and catch.
  • Thrower to other side of the net.
  • Same principle but mirrored.

  • 5x attack per person so 10x toss up.
  • Mutual exchange, 3x total, everyone is the thrower once.
drawing Attack Pass
Practice attack run a few times with a few runs beforehand.

Attention => short long short, slant run, take your arms into the jump, try to get as high as possible.

Then do this exercise in pairs:
  • 1 person throws up
  • 1 person does attack pass with timing => catch as high as possible with 2 hands.
  • Thrower pay attention to correct steps: Short, Long, Connect, take arms with jump.
  • Catcher asks for higher / lower ball so timing is right.
1) First phase: Run-up from about 3 meter line => 5x good jump timing, then change
2) Second phase: Start with fake-block, fast backwards, around the pawn => Throw-up => 5x good jump timing then change.
drawing Attack Pass
  • Players on the cabinets play a fast ball.
  • The net blocks and the back players pass the ball.
  • Play it out.
  • Bring balls to basket and distribute balls to cabinets.
drawing Defense and resolution
  • Trainer in the middle holding up ball to block.
  • Both blocks in the middle.
  • Connect on the side.
  • Under the net, block again.
drawing Block and connect
Goal is action block, good exit and then attack

  • Block middle
  • Block outside
  • Good exit
  • Passing back overhead
  • Attack to a corner
drawing Middle man exercise
Setup:
  • 2 storage players
  • 1 blocker on 2
  • 1 pass
  • 2 defenders
Exercise:
  • Storage is given to or between the defenders.
  • Receptionist joins the pass.
  • Non-reception player attacks at 3 or 4.
  • The person who took the reception runs to the back and jumps over the hurdle.
Passing: storage player > blocker > reception > storage
drawing Reception & block
The goal is to look at the block setting and set it properly.
This can be accomplished by following the following steps:
  • TR hits L.
  • L gives pass on 2/3 run-in SV and set.
  • In base to position 3 and 4.
  • Possibly expand to position 2 and 6.
drawing Move block orders
Running to the net and:

  1. Jump through; block and return. Slightly through the knees.
  2. Block with 1 lateral pass right and block again.
  3. Blocks with 1 side pass right and blocks and again to left side pass and block.
  4. Same as number 3 but then with Cross 'inside' right and again left.
    • Info: if to right blocks start with your left leg, if to left blocks, start right leg.
  5. Same as number 3 but with Cross 'outside'.
    • Info: if to right blocks right leg must also open to make your jump more powerful. reverse to left blocks.
  6. Block with 1 lateral pass right, idem to left. Straight inside cross, same to left. Straight outside cross, idem to the left.
drawing Blocks explanation
1. Player with ball holds it high, other player grabs ball in 'block' and back. 2x10 each.
2. Player with ball throws ball at +/- 20-30cm above the net, other blocks it back. 2x10 each.
3. Player with ball smashes ball, blocker anticipates attack ! 2x10 each.

drawing Block exercise, timing, throwing/ smash per 2.
  • The base team of six gets successively from the small team a serve, an attack -trainer plays rally ball the small team- and a free ball.
  • The trainer plays rally ball on the small team and they play the ball back in one go.
The base team gets 3 attempts to score 3 balls in a row.
  • If this succeeds, they rotate one spot.
  • If this fails, the players from the small team switch with players from the base team.
The goal is to complete all rotations in the time the exercise is run.
  • Service is made from position 5 on a pair; p/l & libero.
  • After service, this person goes to defend at position 5.
  • Side-out must be scored by attackers at position 3, 4 or 6.
  • After the side-out, the coach hits balls from position 4 into the diagonal, which are defended by players at position 4, 5 and 6.
  • From the defense again the attack must be scored. Rally is played out, after which everything starts again.
Points of attention:
  • Block shields position 1 and 2. After the pass/defense cover -don't do nothing-.
  • Make good choices in game distribution.
  • Efficiency training: 20 balls 10 x service & 10x defense.
When everyone has had their turn in this way, we do the exercise in mirror image.
  • Serve from position 1, block at position 3 and 4. Shield position 4 and 5.
  • Defending at position 1, 2, 5 and 6.
  • Attacking at position 1, 3 and 6.
