Volleyball drills for technique passing / defense / reception
- trios with 1 ball.
- A and B are at the net, and C is opposite of A on the end line.
- A throws ball to C, C throws diagonally to B, B catches.
- Meanwhile, A moves with regard to B, and then A throws the ball to C.
- After 20 passes rotate
- Split the group into pairs.
- The pairs will work through a number of stations, where different tasks have to be performed.
- Station 1: A slalom through several poles, with an underhand pass at the end of the slalom.
- Move as fast as possible between the poles.
- Station 2: One player lies down on the backline, while the other stands at the net with the ball.
- Player at the net hits the ball.
- Player in the backfield then stands up, and defends a hit ball at 7 meters, or a prik ball at the 3 meter.
- Station 3: Player stands in front of a trampoline, behind player 1 stands a second player with 2 tennis balls.
- One tennis ball is thrown into the trampoline, player 1 catches it before it hits the ground.
- The second tennisball is thrown quickly after it.
- Station 4: Simple, good block jumps, paying attention to the technique.
- Station 5: Reflex training: player stands with arms outstretched, a ball in each hand.
- Player 2 faces the other player, and reacts to the release of one of the balls.
- Do not make the distance between players too great to begin with.
- Each station has a working time of 1 minute.
- Divide the team into two groups and have them form two rows facing each other on the 3-meter line.
- Have the players play over the net and then walk around the cone to join the other group.
- On 1 side, parallel to the sideline, place a speed ladder and before joining the line, have the players do a drill through the ladder.
- On the other side, place pawns where they have to slalom, turn around.
- Importantly, the ball should not fall to the ground, communication is important.
- Optionally add a penalty if the ball falls to the ground. Head roll, Back roll.
- First with underhand throwing and catching - then overhand. Catch and push change to toss up and over-key.
- Server plays the ball towards position 6
- 1 of the 2 passers, passes the ball towards the playmaker(SV)
- SV plays the ball to the front left or right
- Attacker (A) completes the attack (attack pass to net)
- Attack
server -> passer
passer -> attack
attack -> server
- You have 2 teams one is on one side of the field and the other on the other side.
- There is a ball played in the field the ball may fall on the ground 0/1 time the ball is passed by the teams to the other side of the field.
- If the ball either bounces 1/2 time, goes out or wrong technique a team has a point.
- field is divided in 2 parts
- on side 1 are 1 playmaker, the libero and the middle attackers
- on side 2 are the other players
- there are on each side 1 attacker and 1 blocker and a server.
- depending on the number of players there is 1 passer or 2 passers.
- the purpose of this exercise is to get in agreement with the distributor which ball you want to play.
- With the middle players we will practice on the 'rise' balls and other variations such as the 'neck'.
Some variations on the well known butterfly...:
- Service-pass-catch on SU-position, running after the ball.
- As everyone is chasing his/her ball, each player has a different task, but if desired, a player can have a fixed position.
- Variation 1:
- The SU plays a set-up to position 4, where an attacker stands to play a (placed) attack on the receiver.
- The rotation then becomes: Service -passer -upper - attacker - off-side - service etc.
- Variation 2:
- the fixed SU plays a ball to a receiver 'somewhere' in the field, who makes himself known by calling 'here'.
- The SU learns to react on sound, the receiver learns to communicate his position.
- Variation 3:
- The fixed SU plays the pass backwards to position 2, where the receiver, after an attacking movement, catches the ball and starts serving.
- In the diagram is variation 1
- 3 players in the middle play overhand for themselves.
- 2 players outside also play overhand for themselves.
- The outside players run around it.
- And pass in between.
- The players stand in a diamond in the field.
- On the other side of the field, the hoops are in the corners.
- The trainer/trainer serves easily to the other side.
- On the other side, they try to pass 3 times and then try to drop down into the hoop.
- 1 SV at mid position 3
- 1 player on position 2
- 1 player at position 4
- 2 passers backfield
Exercise starts
passer position 5 starts --> ball BH to SV - as soon as the SV sets this ball to position 4, the passer at position 1 plays the ball BH to SV.
BALROTATION:
- passer at position 5 --> BH to SV
- SV setup to player position 4
- passer at position 1 --> ball BH to SV
- SV setup backwards to player position 2
At 6 players --> see drawing top field BUT then SV plays only 1 way.
At 7 players --> see drawing top field and on bottom field then SV plays only 1 way.
In case of 8 players --> see drawing of upper field.
In case of 9 players --> see drawing of upper field and lower field.
In case of 10 players --> see drawing of lower field.
In case of 11 players --> then a substitute player as defender.

- 3 attackers
- 2 passers
- 1 backup passer
- 1 playmaker
- Trainer hits balls to the passers, after your pass you take the place of the attacker who attacked.
- Except on middle. The middle attacker stays in position and only changes with another middle.
- High tempo so change positions quickly.
- Walk-through exercise at 3 positions underhand.
- Always wait until row is finished.
