Volleyball drills for technique block / net defense
- Split the group into pairs.
- The pairs will work through a number of stations, where different tasks have to be performed.
- Station 1: A slalom through several poles, with an underhand pass at the end of the slalom.
- Move as fast as possible between the poles.
- Station 2: One player lies down on the backline, while the other stands at the net with the ball.
- Player at the net hits the ball.
- Player in the backfield then stands up, and defends a hit ball at 7 meters, or a prik ball at the 3 meter.
- Station 3: Player stands in front of a trampoline, behind player 1 stands a second player with 2 tennis balls.
- One tennis ball is thrown into the trampoline, player 1 catches it before it hits the ground.
- The second tennisball is thrown quickly after it.
- Station 4: Simple, good block jumps, paying attention to the technique.
- Station 5: Reflex training: player stands with arms outstretched, a ball in each hand.
- Player 2 faces the other player, and reacts to the release of one of the balls.
- Do not make the distance between players too great to begin with.
- Each station has a working time of 1 minute.
Organization:
- Field A. 2 players in pass P4 and P3.
- Sv on P2.
- Field B. Block on P2 and P3.
- Serve P1 and defend P4 and P5.
Execution:
- Service on P3 and P4. Then defend on P1.
- Attack hard if possible and tap otherwise.
- Change after 5 services.
- field is divided in 2 parts
- on side 1 are 1 playmaker, the libero and the middle attackers
- on side 2 are the other players
- there are on each side 1 attacker and 1 blocker and a server.
- depending on the number of players there is 1 passer or 2 passers.
- the purpose of this exercise is to get in agreement with the distributor which ball you want to play.
- With the middle players we will practice on the 'rise' balls and other variations such as the 'neck'.
- Side one saves, defend on other side and try to score point against blockers with outs.
- Other 2 who do not have to save, can come in to defend in backfield.
- Have passers alternate as 'chameleons'.
- 2 people on a chair one with 2 tennis balls.
- other side of net must take blocks and tennis balls and pass to other person on chair -block-.
- 10x each
- One press on chair attacking each time, across net blocks and then dive at 3 meter line. Another "supplies" balls for person on chair. each 10x.
- Same as exercise 2. Now comes only a 2nd tip at about 5 to 6 meters. Defending facing the net!
Practice on defense, technical attack and drop balls.
- Practice defensive techniques.
- Improve technical attack techniques.
- Practice with drop balls.
- 1 side with block.
- The attacker puts a block.
- The thrower hits over this.
- The libero or passer passes the ball to the server.
- The server passes the ball to the attacker who just blocked.
- The thrower puts a block and the attacker hits straight through to the defender, who defends for himself.
- Passing: passer becomes attacker -> attacker becomes backup defender -> defender becomes backup thrower -> thrower becomes backup passer.
- Groups of 3 people of approximately equal height.
- The thrower pays attention to the correct steps:
- Short, Long, Connect, Take arms with jump.
- Attacker asks for higher/lower ball to get the timing right.
- Defender determines start of exercise.
Setting:
- One ball per 3-team.
- 2 Blockers face each other at the net.
- Setter next to 1 of the blockers.
Rotation:
- Defender determines start, countdown = 3-2-1 block => try => hands touch each other above the net.
- Defender => shuffle backwards to about 5-6 meter position -speed !
- Attacker => fast to the 3 meters ready for attack.
- Throw up => almost straight up on indication of height attacker.
- Attacker => straight up calm stroke.
- Defender => Pass up and catch.
- Thrower to other side of the net.
- Same principle but mirrored.
- 5x attack per person so 10x toss up.
- Mutual exchange, 3x total, everyone is the thrower once.
Practice attack run a few times with a few runs beforehand.
Attention => short long short, slant run, take your arms into the jump, try to get as high as possible.
Then do this exercise in pairs:
Attention => short long short, slant run, take your arms into the jump, try to get as high as possible.
Then do this exercise in pairs:
- 1 person throws up
- 1 person does attack pass with timing => catch as high as possible with 2 hands.
- Thrower pay attention to correct steps: Short, Long, Connect, take arms with jump.
- Catcher asks for higher / lower ball so timing is right.
1) First phase: Run-up from about 3 meter line => 5x good jump timing, then change
2) Second phase: Start with fake-block, fast backwards, around the pawn => Throw-up => 5x good jump timing then change.
2) Second phase: Start with fake-block, fast backwards, around the pawn => Throw-up => 5x good jump timing then change.
- Players on the cabinets play a fast ball.
- The net blocks and the back players pass the ball.
- Play it out.
- Bring balls to basket and distribute balls to cabinets.
- Trainer in the middle holding up ball to block.
- Both blocks in the middle.
- Connect on the side.

Goal is action block, good exit and then attack
- Block middle
- Block outside
- Good exit
- Passing back overhead
- Attack to a corner
