Basketball drills for technique dribbling

  • wave-9
With 3 men on the back line and the middle one has the ball
  • The middle passes to a man and runs after the ball
  • The man in the middle passes to the man on the other side, who also runs after the ball.
  • They do this while running to the basket on the other side.
  • When someone is close enough to the basket, the man runs a lay-up.
  • He becomes the defender and the other two attackers must try to reach each other with a long ball.
  • The goal of the defender is to prevent the attackers from scoring.
  • If the attackers do not manage to score, they must do 5 push-ups.

Requirements:

players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball Â- players must be able to dribble

Objective:

Set up kick directly over the center line.

Organization:

2 against 2 across the longitudinal half Â- losers must defend in the next round Â- the dribbler must be over the centre line within 4 seconds (the trapper counts down)

the trapper moves aggressively towards the half way line just before the dribbler crosses it (but due to his speed and the position of his defender is not able to change direction) Â- the trapper widens himself, but moves the foot closest to the touchline backwards slightly, so that he can close the touchline with 1 or 2 slides Â- the dribbler must never pass between the two defenders

As soon as the dribbler grabs the ball, the trapper stays with it Â- the other defender sprints towards the free attacker

Teaching Points:

defender forces the dribbler to the side, but must keep an appropriate distance, taking into account the dexterity and speed of the dribbler Â- defender must force the dribbler to move at high speed along the touchline to the attacking half

Variations:

left and right

  • The teacher selects 2 taggers.
  • They have to stay within their box (within the 4 pilons) and tap the basketballs away from the runners if they want to cross.
  • So the runners have to dribble to the other side without losing their basketball.
  • If a runner doesn't have the basketball with him, he is finished and automatically becomes a tagger.
  • A tip you can give to the runners is that they shield the ball with their body.
  • This means keeping your body between the ball and the opponent.
  • The runners are not allowed to cross again until everyone has tapped or reached the other side.
  • In the end, as the game progresses, you get more and more taps and fewer runners.
  • The last remaining runner is the winner.

drawing Trying to run across
  • Setup:
    • Per 2 facing each other
    • Use width of field
  • Dribble 1 against 1 between the lines
  • Swap every time
drawing Dribble beats 1 on 1
  • Full field
  • Per 2 players
  • All players a ball
  • Players face each other on the end line
  • In the middle are 5 cones with tennis ball on them and 5 cones without tennis ball.
At the Go signal, players dribble toward each other.
  1. High five -> change hands, cross over dribble.
  2. High collision ball next to the body, one player grabs the ball from the other. 2 times, rebound.
  3. Roll the ball simultaneously towards each other.
  4. After this, find a cone with tennis ball and move it onto a cone without tennis ball.
  • The attacker is given very little space to maneuver past the defender
  • The attacker is not allowed to look at the ball
  • The attacker accelerates
  • The defender starts working on his footwork
  • Once past the hats, the field is wider and scoring is possible
  • Always score
  • Variation: the defender stands in the middle of the narrowed field and the attacker starts further back so you get a more game-like situation
drawing 1 VS 1 Tight cone drill
  • Four players stand in defensive position.
  • Coach throws the ball against the board.
  • Player 4 takes the rebound and passes the ball to player 2.
  • Player 2 receiving the ball:
    • Receives the ball and watches.
    • Dribbles into the lane just off the center circle.
  • Player 1 on the ball side:
    • Sprints into the lane next to the sideline and looks over his inside shoulder to stay within passing range.
    • Is first option in the start of the fastbreak.
  • Player 3 on the non-ball side:
    • Sprints down the lane next to the center circle and looks over inside shoulder to stay within passing range.
    • Does not go through the center circle if he/she cannot go to score.
  • Player 4 may go take the rebound.

drawing Lay-up with cones
Option 1
  • Blue runs to the middle and receives the pass from orange
  • Orange then fills in blue
  • White and Red come up at the same time that orange passes to blue
  • White receives the pass from blue at the free throw line and faces the basket
  • Red accelerates somewhere near the free throw line and heads for the basket
  • White passes to red and red makes a layup
Option 2
  • After orange passes to blue, orange also cuts across the right side and there is a second playoff opportunity for white.
Option 3
  • Orange and blue continue to cut in and white takes a shot
  • Orange and blue fight for the rebound and a score
* After building this exercise up to Option 3, players must be sharp, there can always be a pass or fight for the rebound.
* There is no dribbling
* Rotation is counterclockwise
