Soccerexercises for technique positional play

Last update: january 2026
drawing The observation game
Formation
  • Distances: 8 by 8 metres.
  • Variations depending on the number of players and age.
  • Ensure players are not too close to each other, but also not too far apart.
Game Rules
  • Each player holds a ball in one hand.
  • The ball may not be switched from hand to hand; otherwise, the player is out.
  • Players move at pace through the area with the ball in hand.
  • Try to knock the ball away from the opponent.
  • The last player remaining wins.
Objective
  • Players learn to be aware of their surroundings and opponents.
  • Avoiding opponents to retain the ball.
Execution
  • For advanced groups, this can also be done with the ball at the foot.
drawing Breaking line in position/party form
  • Goalkeeper in goal. All balls in starting zone.

  • One player has free starting ball which is compulsorily played into Phase 1.
  • After ball lands in Phase 1, starting player joins in box. This becomes 4v4.

  • In the intermediate line is one player that the defending team is not allowed to enter. That is used to move the game from Phase 1 to Phase 2.
  • The player in the intermediate line then joins in Phase 2 for a 3v3.

  • If the defensive side takes the ball away then they set up the counter to the small goal.
  • This remains 3v3 and 4v4, the boxes being the boundaries.
Does attacking take over the ball from defending then everyone recovers their position and we start again.

drawing 4-on-4 with center line and goal area
Set out a field for 4 v 4. For example 20 meters wide by 30 meters long.
Create a center line and a goal area with pawns.

A party game 4 v 4 / 5 v 5 or 6 v 6 is played.
You can deepen the game by giving different assignments such as:

1. Free play; no other assignments beyond the normal rules of the game.
2. No goal may be scored until everyone has crossed the center line.
3. A goal may only be scored inside the goal area after an end pass.
4. Hitting 3 times.
5. Crossing an x-number of times before scoring is allowed.
6. Combination of the above.
drawing The viewing game
Distances 8 by 8 meters. Differences per number and age. Make sure that players are not too close to each other but also not that they can stand on an island.

  • Each player has a ball in one hand. He may not change hands during the game then he is out.
  • Players run at pace through the box with the ball in their hand and try to tap the ball away from the opponent.
  • Last one left standing has won.
The goal is to make players look around them; where are my opponents. And of course avoid them in time so that my ball remains.
Advanced group can also do this with ball at foot.
drawing Dynamic structure of the game
  • In the first part, a goalie, two central defenders play against a striker (3vs1)
  • The central defenders try to play the deepest man (striker)
  • The striker is positioned deep and is defended by two central defenders (build up the degree of defence)
  • When the striker is reached, the two outfield players are allowed to join in and these players will join in under the striker, creating a 3vs2 situation (5vs3 in total)
  • After a shot from the attacking side, the trainer will play a 2nd ball to the striker or outfield players of the other side.
  • This also creates a 3vs2 situation there (5vs3 in total)
  • This way this form continues and the goalkeeper takes turns with the 'build-up'.
drawing Party game 8 handball players in a hexagon
Organization :
  • Set out a 6-corner (see diagram)
  • 2 goals (small one without goalie, other one with goalie) 8 handball players (red), 2 teams of 6 players (depending on the people present)
Explanation :
  • We play a game 6 vs 6 +1 neutral player if there are an odd number of players.
  • 8 players each on 1 side along the hexagon
  • Handball maximum 1 time, no passing to each other, only to the players in the central area.
  • When the ball is out, trainer lets play resume somewhere in the game, can also be to goalkeepers,...
Coaching :
  • Let the form do its work
  • Quick changeover
  • Make your own choices about the rules of play applied, according to the objective (e.g. oblige to have been on the 2 sides, so turn over, maximum 2 times in neutral shape,...)
drawing Set up and finish exercise with backs and forwards
  • Pawns as on picture.
  • Player 1 passes to player 2 right.
  • Player 2 passes to player 3 who drops back a bit.
  • Player 3 rebounds on player 1,
    • Player 1 gives a deep pass to the corner,
    • player 2 and player 4 run deep
  • Variant player 2 goes deep and passes while
    • player 4 in the striker,
    • player 2 in the forward position and
    • player 1 on edge 16
  • Variant player 4 goes deep,
    • player 2 enters 5 meters,
    • player 3 enters 5 meters and
    • player 1 goes edge 16

  • A lot of dynamics and speed.
  • Player 1 is nr 10.
  • Player 2 is right back who goes deep,
  • Player 3 is striker,
  • Player 4 is the right forward
  • Player 2 and player 4 remain fixed on position
  • Player 1 and player 3 change off/on
  • The variant can also be played on the left. Then in mirror image!
drawing positional play 4 goals
  • Duration:
    • 20 min
  • Distance:
    • Width per section 6 mtr length 8 mtr.
  • Goal:
    • Search for the attacker in possession of the ball and pass to him so that he can score.
    • The four players are only allowed to move in their own area to protect the passing line.
    • The 2 attackers are free to move around the four squares but behind the defenders.
    • When the ball is in the possession of the attacker, the defender can try to conquer it in that square.
    • If scoring is too easy, the attackers are obliged to play at least once before they can score.
    • When there are more players in the box, you have to add more players.
    • When there is an uneven number of players, 1 team works with more attacker but then the rule is immediately in force that the attackers must play at least 1x over before they may score.
drawing dead game moment - throw-in
  • Bb4 against bbt 3 exercise 10 minutes.
  • The aim is for the bb side to dribble the ball over the line or pass it several times. (For example, start at 5 and go higher and higher).
  • To make it more difficult they may only touch the ball 2/3 times.
  • Bbt side must try to dribble the ball over the opponent's line.
  • Or pass 5 times.
  • Always play with 1 overtime.
  • Adjust the size of the field if it is difficult to play over.
drawing positioning passing
  • Position game replay 15-20 minutes.
  • Go from easy to difficult:
    • Level 1, 7 or 8 against 3. (if the ball goes round between 15 and 20 times, move on to the next level, the levels take place over weeks and not in 1 training session)
    • Level 2, 7 against 4.
    • Level 3, 7/6 against 5. (10 times around is next)
    • Level 4, 6 against 6.
  • Coach on finding the easy ball and trying to pass the ball into space.
  • When a level doesn't work out, make the field bigger or go back a level.
  • Try to coach your technique training positively when you see the action in positional play (e.g. turning open or handball).
  • BB is making the field big, BBT is making the field small.
drawing positioning 4:2
  • Duration
    • approx 15 min
  • Distances:
    • 5 mtr by 5 mtr
  • Explanation:
    • Playing around the ball or hitting it outside the lines is changing with the hunter.
    • If the ball is played between the 2 hunters, they stay in the middle for 1 turn longer.
  • Coach moment:
    • 4 players must close between the lines where the ball is.
    • When the ball is played in, pay attention to opening up immediately and keep calm.
drawing positional play 4 goals
  • Duration:
    • 20 min
  • Distance:
    • Width per section 6 mtr length 8 mtr.
  • Objective:
    • Search for the attacker in possession of the ball and pass to him so that he can score.
    • The four players are only allowed to move in their own box to protect the passing line.
    • The 2 attackers are free to move around the four squares but behind the defenders.

    • When there are more players in the box, you have to add more players.
    • If there is an uneven number of players, 1 team has more attackers but then the rule that attackers must play at least 1x over before they can score comes into effect.
drawing Exercise 2 - execution via goalkeepers - goalkeeper interaction with upgrade
  • Trainer kicks depth ball.
  • K decides whether to come out or defend goal.
  • Attacker tries to take ball away and score on goal.
  • If goalkeeper has ball, 2 on off via O.
  • Attacker takes ball with him and may not finish in 1 time.
  • Line up twice (2 trainers).
  • Duration 15 minutes.
  • Upgrade 1 :
    • Trainer chooses high ball.
  • Upgrade 2 :
    • 2 attackers instead of 1 (2 VS 2), attacker 2 may only join when goalkeeper can play.
drawing Duel shape and move without the ball
  • We play 2 against 1 (in each mini goal a defender - 3 mini goals) .
  • On 2 mini goals stands a defender (yellow jacket) .
  • Orange jacket plays into the 2 attackers and defends the third goal.
  • Defenders can move freely and defend another mini goal if necessary.
  • Attackers may only score inside the defined zone (yellow).
  • So this is an exercise of how to move without the ball (both A and V) , sliding through A becomes V .
  • Orange jacket stays in same position for a few minutes (intensive).
  • Coaching on free running, moving without the ball.
  • Make actions ok!
  • Passing even better!
drawing Attack
  • Upper exercise:
  • No. 2/5 has the ball.
  • One of these two starts with the ball and plays in number 6.
  • Number 6 bounces the ball back to number 2, number 10 in the meantime, together with number 7, make their move.
  • Number two plays in number 10.
  • Number 10 plays the ball deep on number 2.
  • Number 2 takes the ball at the foot.
  • Number 7 and 9 position themselves in front of the goal while number 2 brings the ball forward.

  • Bottom exercise:
  • Number 6 and 8 take turns playing the ball to number 10.
  • Number 8, for example, plays to number 10.
  • Number 10 bounces the ball to number 6.
  • Number 6 plays the ball closely in front of number 2.
  • Number 2 bounces the ball to number 7, which has entered for action as soon as number two starts running.
  • Number plays the ball and the depth for number two.
  • Number 7, 9, 11 make their run action towards the goal.
  • Number 10 stands on the 16-metre line in front of the falling ball.

Switching positions:

  • Number 6 8 and 10 switch positions. The player inserting the ball lands on the position of the player playing the ball deep for No. 2 or No. 5.
  • The player playing the ball deep substitutes number 10.
  • No. 10 stands behind one of the two with the least number of people.
  • Numbers 7 and 2 alternate positions.
  • Numbers 5 and 11 alternate positions.
drawing Moving the game
  • Defence to attack in a 1-4-4-2.
  • The running forms of the attack and defence are important here.
  • Form two of the two where the focus is on the outfielder 7/8 creates space for the 2/5 .
  • Here the six of the bb game is used to give the through ball.
  • The exercise can be done without or with resistance.
  • In the case of the ball owning party it is important that they do not play the ball directly on the 7/8 but first move the ball for some time between 3->4 4->5, where five gets up high as soon as the ball goes from two to three.
  • When five receives the ball do not play directly to the eight but first back to the four.
  • From four to three and from three to two.
  • Allow the defence to pass the right running lines at the right time before they play the ball to the 7/8.
  • As soon as the ball goes from the two to the seven, pay attention to the correct running lines of the seven.
  • Creating space for the two is done by letting the seven get into the ball and bouncing the ball to the six.
  • After bouncing from the two to the seven the two has to make a run in the deep.
  • The seven bounces the ball onto the six that comes under the ball.
  • The six then plays the ball deep on the two with the nine running to the first post, the eleven behind the nine and the eight around the second post in an oblique line behind the eleven and nine.
  • Ten comes on the sixteen-metre line and the seven diagonally behind the two.
drawing Positioning by playing in between the lines

    • 3 men play the ball around and try to get the ball to the other box.
    • The blue players stand with 2 men in one box.
    • 1 in the blue square to cut the pass line.
    • If the ball is in the other box, the man in the blue box moves on.
    • Then another player of blue takes over this position.
    • Play ball to other box= 1 point.
    • Between 2 players = 2 points.
    • Blue takes the ball away = 1 point.

drawing positioning and countering
  • Expensive:
    • 15 min
  • Distance:
    • 2 boxes 8 by 8 distance between the boxes 8 meters.
  • Execution:
    • Teams start numbering 1.2 to capture the ball in opponent's square.
    • Once this is done, they switch back to their own square and the no. 1,2 of the other team come to their square to capture the ball.
    • In this way they rotate with numbers all the time.
    • In the box where no defenders try to take the ball, they play the ball around quietly.
  • When it doesn't stay in the team and goes out of the box this means 5 push-ups!!!!!.
  • Coaching:
    • Also here it is determined to keep half time and overview they are only 2 opponents.
    • Furthermore it is important to be attentive when you have conquered the ball and switch immediately to your own box.
    • For the team that lost the ball try to switch faster than the 2 defenders so they have 2 people less to play the ball around.
drawing Passing, controlling, turning and passing again
  • This exercise is all about calling and moving.
  • The exercise consists of 4 players in a row. If you have a lot of players, you can make two starting positions.
  • Player A has the ball and plays in on player B. Player B has to call first!
  • Player B takes the ball and passes to player C. Again player C has to call.
  • Player C takes the ball and passes to player D. Player D must also call for the ball.
  • Player D dribbles on to the starting position.
  • From there again as at A.

Attention:

- Calling first before passing

- Start playing it well

- Control and turn

drawing Barca exercise 16 pers.

Make 4x a square of 10m x15m with 16 players

  • 1 player (X) in the middle
  • 3 players on the lines of the square with 2 balls
  • Player X is played by player A on the corner.
  • Player X takes the ball and moves to the other corner of the square and plays player B.
  • Player A on the corner runs to the next corner.
  • After this player D plays in on X who then takes the ball open again and passes on.
  • What follows now is a kind of carousel.
  • The ball always goes crosswise, from one corner to the other.
  • Variation in this is to play the other way around.
  • Player X controls the ball with his right foot and turns and then continues to pass with the left foot.
  • Make sure you stand lightly on the forefeet here.
