3-against-0-drive-and-pass3-against-0-drive-and-pass

Requirements:
players must be able to drive and shoot from the 3-point line

Objective:
1) improve penetration2
) pass out to the shooter from the bucket3
) players without the ball respond to penetration

Organization:

  • penetration ends with jump stop
  • pass to the shooter
  • immediately find a position outside the three-point line.
  • at least 3 penetrations
  • score only with shots
  • play up to the 5 scores

Teaching points:

  • jump stop so you have the choice of pivot foot (but can also shoot directly)
  • the two players without the ball are always actively creating blans in the space division
  • be playable at a place from where you can shoot or drive directly
  • drive with the right hand is to rotate clockwise; counterclockwise with a left dribble
  • OR other agreements you have within your team

1-against-1-plus-help-quarter-field

Requirements:

  • players must be able to drive and shoot from the 3-point line
  • must know what defending ball side and weak side is

Objective:

1) recognize that the defender is giving maximum pressure on the shot and therefore there is room for the drive2
) see the help coming3
) learn way to play off the help as well

Organization:

  • attacker 1 gives a bounce pass to himself on the forward position
  • defender 2 is allowed to move when the ball hits the ground
  • the attacker pivots so that he can shoot
  • free shot (i.e. the ball is not touched by the defender) is a point for the attacker
  • dribble stopped and score prevented by defender 2 is one point for the defender
  • defender 3 starts with one foot in the bucket and is not allowed to move until the ball touches the ground at the start of the drive
  • defender 3 earns one point when he prevents a score by the broken through attacker
  • play until the 3

Teaching points:

  • attackers when picking up the ball immediately pivot and take triple threat position
  • Defender 2 has to start explosively and bridge the last one and a half metres with mini-slides.
  • one hand high, in the shooter's field of vision
  • the foot on the ball side is behind
  • (OR other agreements you have within the team)

Attacker:

  • with a crossover step around the help and finish with a power move
  • stop with a jump stop after the first dribble and finish with a jump shot, fade away or rocker step

Helper

  • estimate on which side the attacker will drive
  • quick first step
  • attacker may never pass between defender 2 and helper

10-fingers-1

Prerequisites:
players must be able to individually pivot and drive from the 3-point line

Goal: in-out
movement, pass lines and drive to the basket

Organization:

  • first man in line has no ball
  • Makes his in-out move and asks for the ball with his outside hand at the 3-point line.
  • Pivots and thus brings himself into the dribble start position
  • with one bounce to the basket
  • Finish with lay up
  • Catch it yourself, dribble to the corner of the court on the other side than where you started.
  • pass the ball to the man in the back and connect with him.
  • Everyone in line moves up 1 position

Teaching points:

  • always make a front move while making the front pivot (face the basket)
  • Adjust on the outside hand, high
  • Sit deep in the spin
  • Pass the ball below knee height
  • After the turn, feet pointing to the basket
  • Knees strongly bent after the turn
  • shoulders above the feet
  • Ready for shot or drive

Variations:

When players have mastered the footwork, expand to include:

  • open step to the elbow + shot
  • shot fake + 1 bounce + jump shot side bucket (move parallel to the sideline)

1-against-1-plus-help-with-pawn

Requirements:
players must be able to drive and shoot from the free throw line

Goal: 1)
see
the
help coming2)
judge if you have time to run a lay up or if you should stop and shoot

Organization:

  • attacker 1 dribbles in the indicated direction around the pawn
  • defender 2 simulates the helper
  • defender 3 simulates the defender who just passed the dribbler
  • each player attacks x times

Teaching points:
during the dribble, assess the speed of the helper and make a decision

Variations:

  • by moving the helper's pawn further away from the ring, there is more room for a lay up
  • Move the pawn closer to the ring to stimulate a stop and a jump shot.

Requirements:
players must be able to drive and shoot from the 3-point line

Goal: get free
at the forward position and improve scoring ability from that position

Organization:

  • attacker 1 receives the pass from 2 after a shallow cut
  • and plays 1 against 1 against defender 4
  • 2 waits for 2 seconds and runs a shallow cut to the other side of the basket and plays 1 against 1 against 5
  • defender counts down aloud as soon as the attacker has the ball in his hands: 23, 22, 21.
  • If the ball has not yet touched the ring, the point goes to the defender.
  • loser of the 1 against 1 goes to defend
  • winner takes the ball and runs outside to the back of the row
  • play until the 7 (defender gets a point if he stops the attacker from scoring)

Teaching points:

  • first cut to the basket
  • then change direction and speed hard to the three-point line
  • Ask for the ball on the outside
  • face the basket immediately after receiving the ball
  • use the front or reverse pivot immediately as a feint
  • read in this pivoting movement on which side the defender leaves room (shot, crossover or open step)
  • sit deep in the turn
  • high speed of action: with a maximum of one feint, unbalance the defender and move to the basket
  • Play with full intensity!

Tip:

if the attacker does not read well and always makes only the action he is good at, instruct the defender how to defend it. In this way, the attacker is forced to first look at where the space is and only then make his decision

1-to-1-forward1-to-1-forward1-to-1-forward1-to-1-forward

1-to-1-forward

1-to-1-forward

Requirements:
players must be able to drive and shoot from the 3-point line

Goal:
practice different techniques to score from the forward position

Organization:

  • Attacker 3 sprints after the pass directly to the forward position.
  • gets the ball there
  • and attacks the basket with a high speed of action.
  • Starts to land in 2TR and shoots.
  • while finishing underneath the basket, always picks up the ball
  • with a big approach step to the desired position under the hoop
  • Pull on the other foot
  • and take off with two feet

Rotation:

  • the passer takes a step backwards to make room for the next passer.
  • the archer catches the ball and passes it to the passer
  • who joins the back of the row with the ball
  • the shooter takes the position of the passer.

Catch and go:

  • catch the ball and attack directly at the elbow
  • sharp change of direction
  • high speed

Mtm offense

Jump back:

  • Attack the elbow
  • Offset under the elbow on your front foot and jump backward
  • pick up the ball and shoot

Jump back and drive:

  • Attack the elbow
  • Jump back and drive: attack the elbow, push off under the elbow onto your front foot and jump backwards
  • do not pick up the ball, but change hands and attack the basket at the weak side

1 on 1

  • the passer is now slightly deeper
  • As soon as he has passed to the forward, he starts defending
  • the attacker applies the different techniques he practised before

Rotation:

the pair that has finished the 1v1 move together to the centre line and swap roles OR the loser defends.

Variations:

  • left and right
  • place the passer in the corner or on the block
  • different techniques of finishing under the board
  • adding a help defender to the weak side, so that the attacker also learns what (im)possibilities are there.

1-against-1-back-half-field

Requirements:
players must be able to dribble a layup run

Objective:
to increase attacking ability in 1 against 1

Organization:

  • player 1 receives the ball from 3
  • 3 moves backwards
  • 1 unbalances 3, passes and goes hard to the basket
  • the defender's task is to stop the dribble
  • loser continues to defend on the same side
  • winner attacks on the other side

Teaching Points:

  • attacker must aggressively close the distance
  • dribble straight at the defender
  • throw the defender off balance
  • attacker must be unpredictable
  • choose which side to pass on at the last moment
  • Use feints in the dribble
  • After passing, go full speed towards the basket
  • play with guts
  • If you cannot, regain your balance and try another technique, e.g. backup dribble + jump shot.

footwork-and-posture

Requirements:

players must know what the correct defensive posture is have

Goal:

  • reinforce good habits regarding defensive position
  • To increase speed and flexibility of footwork

Organisation:

  • do as circuit, 1 minute each time
  • player 1 jumps sideways with 2 feet left and right of the line
  • player 2 does that forwards and backwards.
  • players jump with 2 feet forward wide - narrow - wide. With a jump in the air they do a 180 degree jump and start over again.
  • player 4 passes the ball through the wall to himself and goes with slides to the position where he catches it again. Makes it more and more difficult for himself by increasing the distance.
  • player 5 defends the mid post and chooses every time another position (behind, swim over - full front - swim over low and back again)
  • player 7 makes a square with jumps on 1 foot (feather by landing) always 2x with right, then 2x with left. First left, then right etc.

Teaching points:

  • knees bent
  • head above the

defend-triple-threatdefend-triple-threat

Goal: Defending the forward in triple threat position

Organization:

  • attacker makes an agreed number of different feints before shooting or dribbling to the basket
  • defender must anticipate with a drop step when the attacker threatens to go over the front foot
  • with a two-footed backward hop when the attacker threatens to go over the back foot
  • when the attacker brings up the ball, the defender should quickly step towards the attacker, stand against him, feet wider than the attacker,
  • Trace the ball with your hands
  • When the attacker brings the ball back down, the defender returns to his/her original position with a slide step or a hop backwards (arm's length distance)

Teaching points:

  • react quickly on the feet, before the attacker does
  • Distance from the attacker: match the threat he poses.
  • Shorten the distance to the attacker with mini-slides, so that you can react immediately

Variations:

attacker gives a pass to himself from the bucket edge

Starting exercise:

  • defender starts at arm's length
  • Square up = feet next to each other, chest perpendicular to the line of the ball-basket when the attacker is standing on the axis of the field.
  • Left foot forward when the attacker is standing on the right half of the field and vice versa.
  • Attacker fakes the shot
  • Defender steps forward, hand on ball
  • Attacker brings the ball down
  • defender recovers arm-length distance
  • attacker makes max 2 dribbles, left or right
  • after the stop, the defender steps forward again, hand on the ball

Form of play:

  • as above, but with shot + boxing out (= wall and rebound)
  • 2 scores in a row (also from the rebound!!) OR 2 stops in a row = loser presses and change

defend-dribbler-after-kick-off

Goal: defend the dribbler after stopping the dribble

Organization:

  • man with ball passes to opponent when trainer whistles
  • who takes 1 bounce and stops the dribble in 2 Count Rhythm (2TR)
  • The trainer counts down 5 seconds and then blows his whistle as end signal
  • The aggressive defender steps back to his starting position
  • The roles are now reversed
  • As soon as the trainer whistles you pass the ball to the other player
  • go for it aggressively straight away
  • Try to prevent the other player from passing by keeping your hand in front of the ball (trace the ball)
  • Try to get your feet to the left and right of the pivot foot of the man with the ball so that he cannot turn

Teaching Points:

  • avoid mistakes; do not hit the ball
  • Go for the 5 seconds
  • Get as close as possible to the attacker (but stay in your own cylinder)
  • Move your feet closer to the attacker, but keep your position between the attacker and the basket.

Variations:

  • a third man to whom the ball must be passed within 5 seconds. Choose a limited area in which the third man can run free (use lines on the court, or place pawns).
  • Pass from under the board to the player on the block. This player must try to pivot past the defender and score. Winner becomes attacker on the block, loser passes from the back line.

Form of play:

  • Ten ball on the half court, where the receiver of the ball has to make a dribble start with 1 bounce before he can pass the ball on.
  • idem, but defence MUST double team the man with the ball.

take-the-charge-1

Goal: teach defenders how to catch the attacking foul (= penetrate or charge) (and how to handle physical contact)

Principles:

  1. when the attacker gets closer, move your feet further apart and lower your butt
  2. Hard forearm across your navel for protection.
  3. Always land on both buttocks.
  4. Land in the direction of penetration.
  5. roll to your shoulders and bring your legs up for protection
  6. DO NOT catch with your hands to avoid broken wrists.
  7. scream while falling

Preparatory exercises:

  • players line up in defensive stance
  • Trainer walks forward
  • players put their feet outward, bring the hard forearm in front of their navel and lower their buttocks
  • Trainer shouts "charge".
  • players fall and roll on

defend the dribbler

  • the trainer makes a zigzag movement
  • the players make slide steps and drop steps as if they were defending the dribbler
  • as the dribbler approaches, players move their feet outward, bring the hard forearm in front of their belly button and lower their buttocks
  • trainer calls 'charge
  • players fall on both buttocks in the direction of the penetration and roll through

spin dribble

  • the trainer simulates a spin dribble
  • players take two quick slide steps around their imaginary attacker, land wide, bring the hard forearm in front of their navel and lower their buttocks
  • Trainer calls 'charge'.
  • players fall on both buttocks in the direction of penetration and roll through

slides-from-helpline

Goal: learn or improve side slides + condition

Organization:

  • all players on the helpline, facing the coach
  • when coach bounces the ball all players jump into defensive position
  • coach moves to the left or to the right, parallel to the backline
  • players must stay with their face right in front of the ball
  • increase the level of difficulty by changing direction and/or speed at random

Teaching Points:

  • feet at least shoulder width
  • knees at about 100 degrees (= sitting down deeply)
  • shoulders above the heels (= back straight)
  • Head upright (overlook the field)
  • Hand closest to the ball is low (to be able to tap the ball away on the dribble)
  • Other hand is above the shoulder (to intercept a pass)
  • push hard on the push-off leg to gain speed
  • Feet stay low to the ground (= slide, shuffle)
  • feet do not connect after a slide, but remain at shoulder width

Variations:

  • let the defender keep his hands on his back if you want to accentuate the feet and stance.
  • 1 slide and back to the sideline, 2 slides and back etc. until you reach the sideline; followed by a short fierce sprint back to the sideline
  • first a drop step and then slides backwards to the sideline + sprint back
  • idem, but first a little tap (quickly transfer weight from one foot to the other)

practicing-slides

Prerequisites:

players must know what the correct defensive stance is

Goal:

  • to reinforce good habits regarding defensive position
  • To increase speed and flexibility of footwork

Organisation:

  • always 3 minutes
  • back over the backline with sprint to the basket and then slides to the sideline facing the centre circle.
  • facing each other slowly - wax on wax off
  • faster - hold both hands
  • only the back hand
  • follower holds the leader's shirt
  • leader tries to get free by changing speed
  • follower tries to keep his head in front of the chest of the leader

Teaching points:

  • knees bent
  • shoulders above the feet
  • front foot pointing in the direction
  • hands: wax on - wax off

shell-drill-team-defense-1shell-drill-team-defense-1shell-drill-team-defense-1

Prerequisites:

players must understand the principles of help side and ball side defense

Goal:

To create automatisms in defence

Organization:

5 against 5 on one basket

Successively:

  • pass only
  • pass + cut + fill in
  • drive left + turn the wheel and the same player does a back up dribble + drive right + turn the wheel
  • then he passes and cuts to the weak side
  • the same with a skip pass after the two drives
  • centre comes in from the weak side = catching and forcing a cut to the back
  • both forwards cut in from the weak side in quick succession

Variation:

  • play with 4 out
  • allow the first pass to the centre
  • Defender of the center takes up his position between man and basket while the ball is in the air with a hop.
  • passer cuts past the post
  • centre passes out to the head

Teaching points:

  • all defenders move to their new position while the ball is in the air
  • cutting in after a pass = jump to the ball - catch with the chest and force the ball to be cut in behind you
  • cutting in from the weak side catch the player with your forearm and force him to cut behind you
  • recover immediately after you have helped and the ball is passed out
  • aggressive sprint + mini slides + sitting deep at close out after skip pass
  • centre passes to the head = his defender has to be 'up the line and on the line

recover-plus-slides-quarter-fieldrecover-plus-slides-quarter-fieldrecover-plus-slides-quarter-field

Requirements:

players must be able to defend the man with the ball individually (slides)

Goal: apply individual defensive technique in a simplified game situation

Organisation:

  • attackers use one quarter of the playing field
  • is not allowed to cross the baseline
  • plays 1 against 1
  • the defender may only step over the half-way line once the attacker has put one foot over the half-way line (the attacker may make feints, if the defender steps too early he must first put both his legs back behind the line)
  • the defender first has to sprint to get his position between man and basket, then stay with slides between man and basket
  • winner will attack on the other half of the court
  • Loser keeps on defending in this quarter (turning in at the halfway line).
  • the next pair starts when the predecessor takes the rebound.

Teaching Points:

  • make sure you overtake the attacker by a large margin and only then take the defensive position.
  • then immediately move backwards with slides
  • In case of a defensive fault, the attacker is the winner.

Variations:

  • let the defender keep his hands behind his back if you want to accentuate his footwork
  • You can give good defenders a handicap by having them start 1 or 2 steps behind the attacker
  • attackers can be slowed down by having them dribble behind their back in front of the 3-point line, etc.

overplay-the-high-postoverplay-the-high-post

Goal: high post permanent replay after pass between forward and guard

Organisation:

  • attacker 4 offers himself at the elbow at the moment of the pass
  • defender 3 passes with his back to the baseline
  • when passing back to the guard, defender 3 steps in front (here: right foot) and passes to the other side
  • attackers 1 and 2 try to adjust high post 4 on the elbow
  • if they cannot do so within 2 seconds, they must pass back to each other Each passis a point for the defender.
  • if 4 is matched, he gets a point and plays 1 against 1 against 3
  • the winner gets another point
  • play to the 5

Teaching Points:

  • feet on both sides of the high post
  • keep the elbow cylinder
  • prevent the pass on the high post with the other hand.

Variations:

passers parallel to side of bucket and center asks at the mid post

mtm-defense-help-sidemtm-defense-help-sidemtm-defense-help-side

Prerequisites:

players must know how to use slides and sprints to keep their position between man and basket

Objective:

to teach positioning in the help side

Organisation:

  • in the waiting line white and black take turns; offensive and defensive
  • stop at the side of the bucket, pass the ball backwards to the next player
  • closing the back and changing roles (attacker and defender).

Teaching Points:

  • forearm on the hip of the dribbler
  • sit deep
  • Keep your nose in front of the ball
  • Make sure you stay between man and basket until you get below the block

With two defenders on the help side:

  • The help side defenders start with one foot in the bucket.
  • As soon as the dribbler goes below the free throw line, both help side defenders step in until they reach the helpline.
  • when the dribbler passes his man, they close the way to the basket (under the block or above the elbow)

RECOVERY:

  • Â- as soon as the dribbler picks up the ball they sprint back to their position on the helpline
  • Â- if he passes the ball back to the guard line, then the help position side bucket

Teaching points:

  • defend close to the dribbler; don't leave room for feints
  • only really help to stop the dribbler after he has passed his man
  • but at all times prevent the dribbler from entering the bucket.
  • recover immediately after you have helped and the ball is picked up or passed to the passer
  • in the assisting position, your chest is parallel to the imaginary line between the ball and your man
  • Split vision: see the ball AND your own man
  • until you actually start to help Then you let go of your man and concentrate fully on stopping the dribbler
  • when the ball is passed out, all defenders move to their new position while it is in the air

Rotation:
dribbler 2 and his defender take the bottom positions is3
and 8 go up5
and 7 join the back row the
defenders on the weak side are always the same colour as the defender on ball side

Variation:

  • start with a skip pass
  • 4 starts from the helpline

Teaching points for the recovery and close out:

  • sprint two steps towards your man
  • then use minislides to reduce the distance to an arm's length while lowering your hips.
  • raise one hand to be able to block the shot

fundamentals-combo

Prerequisites:

players must master slides and a close out of the shooter

Objective:

  • to instill good defensive footwork
  • increase speed and flexibility of footwork, plus fitness

Organization:

always 3 minutes

A jump strength

  • start in defensive stance
  • take off with two feet, jump high over the cones (try to touch your chest with your knees)
  • land in balance, spring through the knees, feet at shoulder width
  • and jump directly over the next cones.

B close out weak side shooter

  • two explosive sprint steps, then lower your hips a bit + reduce step size
  • inside foot in front
  • outside hand in the face of the archer
  • Touch the pawn with your inside hand (= check that you are sitting deep enough)
  • take off with 2 feet and jump as high as possible with both arms stretched to block the imaginary shot

C help stopping penetration of the guard

  • two explosive sprint steps, then lower your hips a bit + reduce step size + turn a quarter
  • feet parallel
  • arms wide
  • quick step straight forward + pull in the back foot (in the game when the guard stops and shoots)
  • tap the pawn with your hand
  • push off with 2 feet and jump as high as possible with both arms extended to block the imaginary shot.

D defend the dribbler

  • land in defensive stance
  • powerful sllide steps to just in front of the pawn
  • arms wide
  • touch the pawn with your outside hand (= check that your seat is deep enough)
  • take off with 2 feet and jump as high as possible with both arms stretched to block the imaginary shot

E turn the hips

  • Face and chest parallel to the sideline.
  • walk crosswise towards the backline
  • alternately put the right foot in front of and behind the left leg
  • while doing so the pelvis rotates which increases the flexibility of the hips.

front-the-mid-post-1front-the-mid-post-1front-the-mid-post-1

Goal: Defending the mid post in front if it threatens to get into the bucket

Organization:

  • Forwards 1 and 2 may adjust a center. If they cannot do so within 2 seconds, they must pass to each other. They remain in place
  • as soon as a center has the ball in or near the bucket, they play 2 against 2 and try to score (but passing is allowed)
  • ball side defender plays denial defense
  • weak side defender stands with 1 foot on the helpline
  • as soon as the mid post on the ball side looks for a position on the edge of or in the bucket, defender 5 stands between attacker 3 and the ball
  • at the moment of the lob pass, defender 6 should stand in the back of attacker 3 and try to force the attacking foul
  • when attacker 3 passes to the high post, every defender looks for his own man
  • every pass from forward to forward or a pass from a center back to the forward scores 1 point for the defenders
  • a defensive rebound also scores 1 point
  • for every score from the bucket you lose 2 points
  • foul on a goalie = score
  • On a swing, the hig post looks for a position on the block.
  • Defender 6 stays between man and basket until the block.
  • steps around attacker 4 along the top of the block (top foot first, then step around the block with the bottom foot).

Teaching Points:

  • prevent the pass at the mid-post with 1 hand up
  • with the other hand, feel which way the mid-post is moving.
  • get as close to the attacker as possible (but make sure you can jump to intercept the pass)
  • When switching from denial defense to frontal defense, first move the foot closest to the basket.
  • then pull the other foot in

Variations:

put a defender at the forward to make the pass towards the mid post more difficult

Goal: frontal defense of the low post

Organization:

  • Players 1 and 2 may adjust a center. If they cannot do so within 2 seconds, they must pass to each other. They remain at their place.
  • The attacking centre asks the side of the bucket for the ball.
  • defender must cross between the attacker and the free throw line
  • and defend the attacker in front.
  • every pass from forward to forward scores 1 point for the defender
  • a defensive rebound also scores 1 point
  • for every score from the bucket 1 point is deducted
  • foul on a goalie = score
  • play until the 3

Teaching Points:

  • prevent the pass on the mid post with 1 hand up.
  • Push the attacker backwards with the other forearm (but make sure you can jump to intercept the pass).
  • face to the half way line

fogler-plus-transitionfogler-plus-transitionfogler-plus-transition

Goal: learn/improve defensive position (1 pass or 2 passes away)

Organization:

  • 4 attackers and 4 defenders
  • attackers may only pass
  • immediately after the pass, the passer must change position
  • 2 passes to 4
  • 2 cuts to basket
  • 6 defends the pass to 2 with a jump to the ball
  • defender 8 does not allow the pass from 4 to 2
  • Attackers 1 and 3 move up one position
  • Defender 3 goes from help to denial
  • ball is above the lifeline, so defender 8 moves from the lifeline to the side of the bucket

drop-step-and-slides

Goal: learn or improve drop step and side slides + condition

Organization:

  • place 5 cones as shown
  • vary distance and angle
  • players move with slides from one pawn to the other
  • at every cone they make a drop step and change hands from high to low and vice versa
  • Always face the back line where the player started.
  • between pawns 3 and 4, a short quick sprint (now with the face to the other back line)
  • at pawn 4, turn 180 degrees, assume defensive position, drop step + slides to pawn 5
  • in a quiet run back to the starting point

Teaching Points:

  • Feet at least shoulder width.
  • Knees at about 100 degrees (= sitting down deeply)
  • shoulders above the heels (= back straight)
  • Head straight up (overlook the field)
  • Hand closest to the ball is low (to be able to tap the ball away on the dribble)
  • Other hand is above the shoulder (to intercept a pass)
  • push hard on the push-off leg to gain speed
  • Feet stay low to the ground (= slide, shuffle)
  • feet do not connect after a slide, but remain at shoulder width
  • at the drop step, the foot closest to the ball moves backwards quite a bit; then the defender changes direction and the hands change from high to low and vice versa
  • intermediate sprint must be quick (= simulate recovery of defensive position after the dribbler has passed the defender)
  • take up position between pawn 4 and the basket and immediately with slides to pawn 5

Variations:

  • let the defender keep his hands behind his back if you want to accentuate his feet and stance
  • make bigger differences in the distance between the pawns and the angle they are placed to each other.

sending-the-dribbler-to-the-lane

Requirements:

  • players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball
  • players must be able to dribble

Goal: defender must keep the dribbler in the marked area, so that it crosses the center line in the lane

Organization:

  • waiting player takes the ball
  • and counts down 8 seconds
  • The dribbler has to touch the helpline at least once with his foot before he can cross the
  • the half way line.
  • the dribbler wins if he crosses the half way line outside the marked area (choose a line on the field)
  • defender wins if he allows the dribbler to cross the centre line inside the marked area OR at 8 seconds
  • loser has to defend in the next round

Teaching Points:

  • defender must keep an appropriate distance, taking into account the dexterity and speed of the dribbler
  • Defender must anticipate the changes of direction of the dribbler.

dribbler-lane-keep-learningdribbler-lane-keep-learning

Requirements:

  • players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball
  • players must be able to dribble

Goal: defender must force the dribbler to the side of the field. Dribbler must never penetrate over the defender's front foot and through the middle

Organization:

  • choose a line on the field and demarcate the lane with it
  • the dribbler must reach the baseline within 5 seconds
  • the waiting player counts down aloud
  • every time the attacker dribbles over the chosen line, he has a point (waiting player will judge doubtful cases)
  • the attacker then dribbles back to the touchline at the same height and lets the defender take his position. The players continue the game, the time runs on
  • defender pushes up 5 times for each point
  • Attacker becomes defender, waiting player starts dribbling

Teaching Points:

  • front hand points to the ball
  • at the start of the dribble, the front foot of the defender should be next to the attacker to prevent him from coming directly over the front foot.
  • Encourage the attacker to try this every time
  • defender should keep an appropriate distance, taking into account the dexterity and speed of the dribbler
  • defender should take a slide-step towards the half way line and towards the by-line to prevent the attacker from penetrating over the front foot.

Variations

  • start with restrictions for the dribbler: compulsory dribbling with the weak hand; other hand on the back etc.
  • as the defenders improve, remove these restrictions step by step

Game shape:

  • helper starts on the block
  • and may only defend in the marked block
  • attacker has 8 seconds to score (the helper counts down)
  • if attacker 1 manages to pass defender 3 over his front foot, he can score through the bucket, without the helper being able to do anything
  • if defenders 2 and 3 are only allowed to help in the marked area
  • at a score the attacker keeps the ball
  • at a stop, the players move up one position

Requirements:

  • players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball
  • Players must be able to dribble

Goal: defender forces the dribbler to the side of the field and reduces the distance so that the dribbler grabs the ball.

Organization:

  • choose a line on the field and demarcate the lane with it
  • the defender has to keep the attacker inside the lane
  • the dribbler has to be at the back line within 5 seconds
  • the waiting player counts down aloud
  • immediately after the start of the dribble, the second defender locks the dribbler in the back of the court
  • as soon as the dribbler takes the ball, the defenders together cut off the passing lines towards the half way line
  • and only passes they allow are parallel to the touchline

Teaching Points:

  • first defender must aggressively close the gap
  • AND close off the touchline
  • second man starts as soon as the dribbler crosses the half way line
  • trace the ball
  • defenders always one hand low and one hand high (umbrella)
  • attacker is never allowed to step or pass between the defenders
  • avoid mistakes; conquer the ball by 1) 5 seconds, 2) bad pass, 3) attacker's foot on the line

Variations

  • start with restrictions for the dribbler: mandatory dribbling with the weak hand; other hand on the back etc.
  • as the defenders improve, remove these restrictions step by step
  • 2 extra attackers and 2 extra defenders. After the dribbler has picked up the ball, the 2 extra attackers try to open up a passing line The defenders must intercept the pass

dribbler-in-lane-and-out-boxing

Requirements:

  • players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball
  • players must be able to dribble
  • players must be able to outbox

Goal1: Defender must force the dribbler to the side of the field. Dribbler may never penetrate over the defender's front foot and through the middle.

Goal2: boxing out after the shot

Organization:

  • 1 against 1 across the longitudinal half
  • Loser must defend in the next round, takes the ball and stays on his own length half.
  • attacker goes to the other longitudinal half
  • defender must push 3 times in the centre circle if the attacker can make a lay up.

Teaching Points:

  • defender must keep an adequate distance: do not allow penetration
  • immediately after the shot, the defender seeks contact with the attacker
  • back parallel to the baseline
  • boom out with a front pivot or a reverse pivot

keeping-the-dribbler-in-the-lane

Requirements:

  • players must be able to individually defend the man with the ball
  • players must be able to dribble

Goal: defender must force the dribbler to the side of the field. Dribbler must never penetrate over the defender's front foot and through the middle

Organization:

  • 1 against 1 across the longitudinal half
  • Loser must defend in the next round
  • defender must press down 3 times if the attacker comes between the defender and the helpline anyway

Teaching Points:

  • defender must keep an appropriate distance, taking into account the dexterity and speed of the dribbler
  • defender must keep a constant distance from the three-point line (i.e. when the attacker comes within shooting distance of the basket)
  • as the skill of the defenders increases, reduce the distance to the attackers

double-team-after-a-stop-dribble

Goal: securing the dribbler against the sideline after stopping the dribble

Organisation:

  • defender passes to attacker on signal of the coach
  • Attacker is NOT allowed to dribble, only to pivot.
  • the trainer counts down 5 seconds

Teaching Points:

  • Get as close to the attacker as possible (but stay in your own cylinder).
  • Move your feet closer to the attacker, but keep your position between the attacker and the helpline.
  • If the attacker allows you to have his back, move your feet forward.
  • trace the ball
  • defenders always one hand low and one hand high (Umbrella)
  • the attacker is never allowed to step or pass between the defenders (only passes parallel to the sideline are allowed)
  • avoid mistakes; conquer ball by 1) 5 seconds, 2) bad pass, 3) attacker's foot on the line

Form of play:

Two additional attackers running free outside the lane. A successful pass between the defenders is a point for the attackers. 5 seconds or foot of the attacker on the line is a point for the defenders. Play to the 2.
