Basketball drills

  • Depends on the number of balls.
  • In pairs or alone
  • When alone:
    • Start at your position, dribble across the basket.
    • Set or Jumpshot from your position (Guard, forward, center).
    • Up to 8 points.
  • In pairs:
    • Start at your position, pass to the opposite side of the basket.
    • Last pass should be good so that shooter in jumpshot is ready for his/her shot.
    • Up to 4 points per player.
    • Losers: Slides over the width of the pitch, 1x back and forth.
  • You make 2 teams divided over 2 baskets.
  • Dribble around the post and pick a side.
  • Run a lay-up.
  • The first to reach the proposed number of scores wins.
  • The losing team must run to the back line and back. (start on the back line and run to the back line)
drawing 2-basket shooting race
  • 2 groups at the level of the free throw line.
  • Left side passes to players coming from the right side cut in.
  • Option 1: lay-up.
  • Option 2: shot in front of the hoop.
  • X number of shots in succession.
  • Left and right sides.
  • Own rebound and pass.
drawing Lay-ups
  • Players line up in 2 groups on the same side of the field (sideline).
  • Everyone except the first two in line have a ball.
  • The players without ball run to the opposite side of the field. (top of key)
  • The first player with the ball dribbles to the 3 point line on the side where he is standing and passes the ball to the incoming player at the top.
  • When he takes the ball. (Swing the ball, fake, crossover, drive and finish with lay-up.)
  • The player who passed the ball runs to the other side of the court where his drill begins.
  • On one side L and other side R lay-up.

This game form consists of two teams. These two teams can either compete against each other, or work together in a race against the clock.

1) Make two teams of about the same number of players.
2) Each team has a ball and its own hoop.

In the middle of the field there is a hoop with pawns in it. These are pawns in the shape of a hat.

  • One player of each team dribbles to the hoop, zigzagging through the poles.
  • The player takes one hat from the hoop and puts it on his/her head.
  • The player dribbles with the hat back to his/her own hoop.
  • The player dribbles back to his/her own hoop, takes the hat off his/her head and puts it in the hoop.
  • The player gives the ball to the next player and the next player can leave.

Can be extended to four teams, with the two other teams dribbling in from the sides of the field.
drawing The hat game
  • Prior to the exercise, we first stretch and run a suicide.
  • The ball is in the middle.
  • Two persons run backwards on the starting signal to the back line, then first to get hold of the ball on the middle line.
  • A 1-on-1 situation then arises here in which the person with the ball attacks and the other must defend.
drawing Warming up
  • Player sprints from the corner baseline to the first post.
  • At the first post a drop step and slides towards the second post.
  • From the second post, backward defensive footwork to the third post.
  • At the third pole a dropstep followed by slides to the fourth pole.
  • You do this until you are back at the starting point.
drawing Defensive footwork
  • 5 x 2 free throws.
  • 2 groups side by side.
  • Each takes turns shooting.
  • Count how many in.
  • 2 misses = length of run.
  • 1 miss = half length run.

Two rows on the center line, 1 player in the corner on the baseline.

  • Beginning with right layups:
    • Ball is with the proposal player in the right row.
    • First player in left row runs to the forward.
    • Player with ball passes ball to player in left row.
    • Player in left row makes a jump stop.
    • Player in right row touches sideline at free throw line and makes a cut to the basket.
    • Player with ball passes to other player at correct time (other player asks for ball).
    • Player right row makes layup. (Pay attention to correct two-count rhythm)
    • Player in left row catches the ball (active rebound!) and passes to the player in the corner. (no ball on the ground!)
    • Player in the corner passes ball to next player in line.
    • Catcher becomes player in the corner.
    • 15 scores.
  • Next:
    • left layups - 15 scores --> pay attention to correct two-count rhythm, otherwise score does not count!
  • Points of Attention:
    • Pay attention to correct two-count rhythm.
    • Pay attention to correct hand. (left lay-up with left hand)
    • Make sure that tight passes are made, in front of the man (so that the receiving player does not have to slow down in her movement to the basket).

drawing WarmingUp - Lay-ups, two rows, with passing and catching
  • 4 Players on the baseline.
  • Player B has ball and dribbles to the cone.
  • B passes to player C.
  • B and C go to goal.
  • Player A and D sprint around the cone and start defending.
drawing RUN AND PLAY 2-2
  • 3 teams of 3 players
  • 3 players in the middle
  • Attacking
  • Defense up to the center line, even after ball loss
drawing 3 by 3 by 3
This exercise sounds simple but it certainly is not:
  • The idea is for the player with the ball to get past a 100% giving defender in 3 dribbles.
  • The scoring player stays put, misses then goes out and the defender may attack against a new person.
  • The goal is for the player to give everything during this exercise.
  • Here the attacker is forced to be explosive and use his whole body.
